SIGNALING AND RECEPTION IN THE
VOLATILE WORLD OF INSECT OLFACTION

ZAIN SYED
Assistant Professor
Department of Biological Sciences
University of Notre Dame

Insects interpret the rich chemical landscape around them through a combination of physiological and behavioral adaptations. I will discuss how different insects employ olfaction as a key sensory modality in mate, host and habitat selection, and how the underlying chemical signals can be unveiled using a variety of analytical, genetic, molecular, sensory physiological and behavioral techniques. I will highlight how this basic understanding of arthropods neuroethology can lead to the development of novel attractants (Syed and Guerin, 2004, J Insect Physiol; Syed and Leal, 2009, PNAS) and repellents (Syed and Leal, 2008 PNAS; Syed et al 2011 PLoS One). Finally, I will discuss on how genome analysis is yielding novel insights into the evolution of olfactory systems in changing landscapes (Rund et al, 2013 Nature Scientific Reports; Reidenbach et al 2014, Parasites & Vectors).
