The management of wolves in inexorably tied to the management of white-tailed deer and the nature of this relationship has had a profound impact on the development of wildlife management as scientific discipline. Early wolf and deer controversies figured prominently in the development of Leopold’s Land Ethic and perceptions about wolf impacts on Wisconsin’s deer population are shaping policy decisions right now. I will examine the science and history of deer and wolf management in Wisconsin using both historic and contemporary research. My goal will be to inform the very active discussion about where we go next in terms of wolf conservation in the Great Lakes Region.
