The objective of the New Hire IT Orientation program is to provide new employees at the University of Illinois formal training on software applications and IT practices that have been identified as critical to success within the campus environment. Each session will be delivered by technical trainers, with training material (including leaning aids) for each attendee.

Attendees may sign up for all sessions or choose only those sessions that they need.

These sessions are offered at no cost to faculty/staff of the University of Illinois.

Introduction to Campus Computing

This one-hour workshop helps a beginning computer user learn the basics.  Topics will include starting and logging onto a computer, navigating in Windows, and using a keyboard, mouse or touch screen for input.  File management basics will be discussed for efficient file storage and retrieval, including an overview of cloud computing. We will wrap up the session by exploring the internet, looking at different browsers and taking a tour of some helpful University web sites. Optional skill assessment for Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Windows will be available at the conclusion of the session.

Calendar topics will include scheduling and editing an appointment; scheduling a one-time and a recurring meeting; and how to respond to meeting invitations in email.

Finally we will learn how to save your place to finish later.

Campus Communication using Microsoft Lync

Microsoft Lync provides a single interface on your computer that unites voice communications, instant messaging, and audio/video/web conferencing all at once. In this two-hour workshop, attendees will learn how to start and sign on to Lync, how to navigate the Lync program window, learn about presence (availability status); add contacts to a contact list, and find help resources. Next attendees will practice using the voice and video features of Lync, including how to adjust audio settings, make and receive a phone call, a conference call, and a video call. Practice will also include putting calls on hold, transferring and forwarding calls and checking for missed calls and voicemail. Another form of communication in Lync is Instant Messaging. We will learn how to send an instant message, how to reply, and how to format text in the message. Finally, the integration between Microsoft Outlook and Lync will be explored, including how easy it is to communicate with others from within an email message or calendar event.
