Springfest Week Volunteer Project
The Volunteer Center has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity on a program called ''A Brush with Kindness'' to improve existing homes for local families that could use a little extra help. UIS participants will be fixing up the homes of six people/families that have been selected by Habitat. These will be exterior home improvement projects that may range from but are not limited to painting (or paint prep), landscaping, fencing, and many other tasks. No experience is required and a ''construction manager'' from Habitat will be at each site to guide your efforts.
When are we going and how do I register?
We have worked to provide various times throughout the week that your team members can attend a service session. Times are listed below and registration must be completed at: http://habitatspringfest.eventbrite.com/ Spaces for each shift are limited. Each team member must register individually, so please share this information with you team members.
Where are we going and how do we get there?
You have the option of riding in a UIS van/bus or providing your own transportation/carpool. If you choose to ride the bus/van please meet in the TRAC parking lot (the curved shaped, north lot nearest LRH/UHB) 10 minutes prior to the listed start time for your shift. If you are carpooling you can either meet at the TRAC parking lot and follow the vans to the ''rally point'' or you can meet us at the parking lot of the Zion Baptist Church (1601 E Laurel Street) at the start time for your shift. At the rally point, you will check in (for your Springfest points), be assigned your work site, meet your UIS team leader, and depart to your nearby work site. At the end of the shift you will return to the rally point and then the busses/vans will head back to campus.
How do springfest points work for this event?
Each team member can only attend one shift for points. Points for this event will be calculated by the proportion of your team that attends a shift (so if 10 of 10 members attend you get full points, if 5 of 10 members attend you get 50% of full points, this way larger and smaller teams have the same opportunity to score full points). It does not matter which shift each member of your team attends, total attendance will be determined at the end of the week (so one member can go Monday and another Thursday, etc.)
