Physics - Colloquium

Correlated electronic systems, in which electrons show cooperative effects rather than acting independently, are of interest not only for elucidating the origin of emergent behavior arising from simple components, but also due to the practical applications of the resulting physical phenomena. In the last fifty years, advances in our understanding and experimental realization of emergent quantum phenomena have been inextricably linked to our ability to synthesize and characterize materials. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the state and future of key fields in condensed matter physics – particularly superconductivity, quantum magnetism, and topological insulators – with specific examples of how materials discovery and new characterization methods combine to advance these areas.
