The veterinary dentist often is required to recognize and surgically treat a wide variety of oral and maxillofacial diseases in animals. The purpose of this specialist-in-training lecture and laboratory program is to provide veterinary dentists in training with the knowledge to be able to recognize a wide variety of oral and maxillofacial diseases in animals, to develop an appropriate treatment plan and to perform appropriate surgical treatment for these diseases in animals. The oral and maxillofacial diseases and procedures that will be reviewed in this program include: recognition and surgical treatment of oral tumors, recognition and treatment of congenital and acquired palatal defects, ventral approach to the nasal cavity, recognition and treatment planning for jaw fractures and temporomandibular luxations and recognition and surgical management of unusual oral lesions. This intensive two-day (16-hour) course is designed to give veterinarians an opportunity to become familiar with advanced oral and maxiollofacial surgical techniques in both a lecture and laboratory setting. The schedule involves four 4-hour sessions, including a 1-hour lecture followed by a 3-hour lab. This course has been approved by American Veterinary Dental College Credential Committee for surgery training requirements.
