Jupiter, Saturn, and a host of newly discovered "exo-planets" are thought to be composed largely of hydrogen and helium. To understand the planets, we need to study properties of hydrogen and helium under the extreme conditions of temperature and pressure inside those planets, conditions hardly accessible to laboratory measurements. I will describe how we use high performance computers such as Blue Waters at the University of Illinois to calculate those properties and thus to help understand some of the most important objects in the Universe.
