Special Topics on Optimum Use of Magnetics in Switching Power Supplies

As they always have been, magnetics remain key components in switching power supply design, impacting both size and efficiency. Beyond just being important, magnetics maintain a unique role in the circuit design process. For example, it is much more likely that a magnetic device will be custom designed than a resistor or capacitor. And from manufacturer to manufacturer, inductors are the least standardized both in actual form and how they are characterized on datasheets. This presentation will describe developments in leading edge inductors, with an emphasis on how to achieve design optimization with tools to better predict inductor performance.
- Soft-saturating inductors provide high current, low loss performance. To fully utilize the high power density capabilities of these inductors, new tools are required for examining the relationship between performance and size, under a range of operating conditions like frequency and peak-to-average current ratio, as well as environmental factors like ambient temperature range.
- Coupled inductors for SEPIC, fly back, and energy harvesting offer a greater degree of flexibility and performance than is possible with single inductors. Key to using transformers effectively is to strike the right balance between the low cost benefits of standard parts versus the flexibility of custom designs.
Len Crane has over thirty years of inductor design and application experience with Coilcraft, serving as Engineering Manager for nineteen years and Technical Marketing Director since 2005. In his present role, Len focuses on the application of Coilcraft products; developing application notes and web tools for the optimal selection and use of Coilcraft inductors.
Len Crane holds a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois and a master's of engineering management from Northwestern University.
