LED 50th Anniversary Symposium

In 1962, Illinois alumnus Nick Holonyak Jr. invented the first practical visible-spectrum LED. The University of Illinois, College of Engineering, and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will celebrate Holonyak’s invention and the work his colleagues, former students, and many others have done to develop the LED with the LED 50th Anniversary Symposium. 

Distinguished speakers scheduled to participate in the LED 50th Anniversary Symposium include:

  • Zhores Alferov, Russian Academy of Science (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2000)
  • George M. Craford, SSL Fellow, Phillips-Lumileds
  • Nick Holonyak Jr., Bardeen Endowed Chair (Sony) Professor, University of Illinois
  • Osamu Kumagai, President, Advanced Materials Laboratories, Sony Corporation
  • Anthony Leggett, MacArthur Professor of Physics, University of Illinois (Nobel Prize in Physics, 2003)
