Event Detail Information
John Philip Sousa composed “People Who Live In Glass Houses” in 1909 as a set a colorful character pieces reflecting the countries in which various alcoholic drinks were said to have originated. The work was premiered in 1909, but it never gained the same broad audience appeal as his suite, “Dwellers of the Western World,” which was written in 1910 in preparation for his band’s 1910-1911 World Tour. Under the direction of Dr. Linda Moorhouse, the University of Illinois’ Wind Orchestra will perform an exciting program that celebrates both Sousa’s continuing contribution to American music and Morton Gould’s 100th birthday. The concert will include Gould’s “Saratoga Quickstep” and “Hymnal,” both Sousa’s and Ira Hearshen's versions of “The Thunderer,” “People Who Live In Glass Houses,” and many other entertaining selections from America’s musical past.
