"Learning results from what the student does and thinks and only from what the student does and thinks. The teacher can advance learning only by influencing what the student does to learn" (Herbert A. Simon, quoted in How Learning Works by S. A. Ambrose and others). In this workshop, we will discuss some of the basic ideas about how students learn, looking for insights about teaching practice that can be gleaned from theories of learning. The discussion of theory will stay at a fairly basic level, with the focus being on teaching practice.
