Goals

While it is generally conceded that globalization produces complex patterns of hybridity, relatively little is known about the manner in which such changes unfold. This interdisciplinary workshop will investigate the social processes of cultural globalization. The main questions to be asked are how, and why, cultural innovations are variously sought or rejected in particular contexts. Addressing these questions requires us to explore the intersubjective meanings associated with new ideas and practices, as well as their potentially cascading effects, both within formal settings and in everyday life. We will also examine the routes and mechanisms through which cultural changes are transmitted, as well as the existence of institutional and structural factors that constrain or limit such change. Along the way we will consider media, international institutions, migration, transnational relations, and other sources of globalization.

Format
As a framework for discussion the workshop will draw on a small number of theoretical readings, upon which participants will be asked to reflect. However, it will focus primarily on participants' own research projects, allowing equal time for presentation and feedback.
