The current state of the Black family is a controversial topic of discussion. It’s popular to highlight absentee fathers, out of wedlock births, and the overall “breakdown of the family structure” within the African American community. Through an examination of the evolution of the Black family from the enslavement era to the Hip-Hop era, the complexities of the African American family are better understood. This talk will be a discussion about the historical, psychological, economic, political, social, and religious factors that have contributed to the current state of the Black family.
