The South Pole Telescope, Herschel, and ALMA have opened a window to the millimeter (mm) sky and revealed a unique and unprecedented view of the Universe. I will present an overview of the rich scientific questions which are currently being addressed by studying the mm sky. I will discuss the latest results in the field, touching on fundamental cosmology from the cosmic microwave background, surveys of galaxy clusters via the Sunyaev Zeldovich effect, the redshift evolution of the cosmic infrared background and the global star formation history, and constraints on the epoch of reionization. I will end with some views of what is in store in the coming decade and how current and upcoming surveys in the mm will relate to optical surveys such as DES and LSST.
