Talking With Our Hands: Gesture's Role in Creating and Learning Language
Imagine a child who has never seen or heard any language at all. Could this child invent a language? Deaf children who are not exposed to sign language use gesture to communicate, and their gestures take on many of the forms and functions of language. Hearing children, learning language from a linguistic model, gesture too. Their gestures are integrated with speech, and can predict when and how children will learn.
