SUMMARY:Ellen Yi-Luen Do (Georgia Tech) - Design Computing and Intuitive
 Interfaces
CREATED:20070823T120000Z
DESCRIPTION:AbstractDesign and Human-Computer Interaction are crucial com
ponents of information technologies in daily life and they color our exp
erience ofcomputation and communication. The age of ubiquitous/pervasive
/ambientcomputing is upon us. What does this mean to us when we have com
putingwithout computers\, where information processing has diffused into
everydaylife\, and virtually become invisible?Over the years Ellen have
been working in a collaborative andinterdisciplinary research studio ai
med at fostering and developing ideasthat will shape the future of desig
 n. Her work crosses the boundaries ofdesign and human-computer interacti
on\, cognitive science and studies ofdesign. She will discuss recent wor
k in building intelligent tools for designand HCI\, including freehand s
ketching and other 'intuitive' interactionmodes\, and computationally au
gmented artifacts and environments. Ellen iscommitted to building better
design tools\, from understanding thehuman intelligence involved in the
design process and leading to theimprovement of the interface with comp
uters. Her research explores newmodalities of communication\, collaborat
ion\, and coordination\, as well asthe physical and virtual worlds that
push the current boundaries ofcomputing environments for design.About th
e SpeaekerEllen Yi-Luen Do is an associate professor in the College of A
rchitectureand the College of Computing at Georgia Institue of Technolog
y\, anddirector of a design computing and cognition lab called ACME Crea
tivityMachine Environment (ACME Lab). Before joining Georgia Tech\, she
was afaculty at Carnegie Mellon University (04-05) where she co-directed
theComputational Design Lab\, and on the faculty at University of Washi
ngton(99-04) where she co-directed the Design Machine Group\, and served
asFaculty Advisor for the MS program in Design Computing\, and theUnive
rsity's Honors Program. She worked on the development of computer aided d
esign tools to supportfreehand drawing as an interface to knowledge base
d tools. She hasconducted empirical studies of design drawing and constr
ucted computersoftware to integrate knowledge based applications with fr
eehand drawing. She has also worked in the areas of computer based visual
  analysis tools.For more info\, visit http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~ellendo
