SUMMARY:Mysteries of the Iconographies

DESCRIPTION:Carolee Schneemann transformed the definition of contemporary
  art\, steering it toward a discourse on the body\, sexuality\, and gend
 er. Schneemann initially examined these issues through the medium of pai
 nting\, but in the early 1960s she began employing other medianotably\, 
 performance art\, installation art\, and documentary photographyto explo
 re suppressive taboos and the relationship between the individual human 
 body and the social body. This lecture is in conjunction with a retrospe
 ctive exhibition of her work\, presenting Schneemanns career from her ea
 rliest work to her most recent investigations\, ultimately revealing the
  artists thought process. The exhibition\, Carolee Schneemann: Within an
 d Beyond the Premises\, January 27April 1\, 2012\, East Gallery\, Kranne
 rt Art Museum\, includes paintings\, drawings\, photography\, installati
 on work\, video projections\, and writings. Schneemann is a MFA graduate
  from the School of Art + Design\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Cham
 paign.
