oengineering\, University of Illinois at Chicago

DESCRIPTION:Title: Sonic Imaging: New Acoustic Paradigms in Medical Diagn
osisAbstract: Novel sonic imaging techniques for medical diagnosis are b
eing developed in the Acoustics & Vibrations Laboratory of Professor Tho
mas J. Royston in collaboration with other engineering and medical resea
rchers in Chicago. These techniques use audible frequency sound (not ult
rasound)\, either by itself\, such as in multi-sensor measurement of the
transmission of sounds in the lung\, or to provide enhanced and quantit
ative contrast within another medical imaging technique. For example\, i
n microscopic magnetic resonance elastography ('MRE)\, sonic frequency s
hear waves sent through biological tissue are imaged via high field phas
e gradient MR to identify anomalies\, such as increased stiffness due to
fibrosis or a tumor\, which locally alters shear wave motion. This tech
nique can also be used to noninvasively track the development of enginee
red tissues\, including chondrogenic\, adipogenic and osteogenic. In thi
s talk\, I review our NIH-funded progress to date in developing high res
olution MRE and I introduce The Audible Human Project'\, an NIH-funded
endeavor to develop and validate a comprehensive understanding and simul
ation model for sound generation and transmission throughout the pulmona
ry system and torso.Biography: Thomas J. Royston\, Professor and Head o
f the Dept. of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago\,
received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State in 1995. His
research interests are in the area of structural acoustics\, with appli
cations in medical diagnostics including high-field MR elastography and
lung acoustics. He is a recipient of the Acoustical Society of America's
  R. Bruce Lindsay Award. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mecha
nical Engineers (ASME) and serves as Associate Editor for the ASME Journ
al of Vibration and Acoustics. He is a recipient of the UIC University S
 cholar Award.
