SUMMARY:Special ICMT Seminar: "Entanglement Entropy in Ordered and Quant
 um Critical Systems"
CREATED:20120131T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:The last few years have seen a surge in study of entanglement
entropy in different fields of theoretical physics. In condensed matter
\, entanglement entropy\, and various generalizations such as Renyi/Tsal
lis entropy\, mutual information and entanglement spectrum\, have been c
onsidered a useful tool for characterizing exotic quantum phases and qua
ntum phase transitions that denies a description by a conventional symme
try breaking paradigm of Landau. Yet relatively little attention has bee
n dedicated to that of the conventional long-range ordered phases or cri
tical phases. In this talk\, I will talk about a series of work that foc
uses on the entanglement entropy of such "well-understood" phases\, and
show that they have non-trivial entanglement properties due to either th
 e long-range order\, or the quantum criticality. In the first part\, I w
ill focus on entanglement entropy of long-range ordered systems[1]: a fe
rromagnetic model\, an antiferromagnetic model\, and a set of free boson
models with long-range hopping\, and show that in all these cases\, the
entanglement entropy (or the mutual information at finite temperatures)
scales as ~ log L. For the second part\, I shall discuss the entangleme
nt entropy of Fermi liquids in two dimensions[2]\, which is one of the s
implest and well-understood quantum critical phases. In the absence of i
nteraction\, the entanglement entropy of free fermions is solved by Gieo
 v and Klich[3]\, using the Widom's conjecture\, and scales as the area-l
 aw enhanced by a logarithmic factor\, E ~ L^{d-1} log L. We re-derive th
is result via high dimensional bosonization\, generalize the method to t
ake into account the Fermi liquid interaction\, and show that the entang
lement entropy is not renormalized by the interactions.<br>[1] WD and K.

SUMMARY:CTA Theoretical Astrophysics and General Relativity Seminar: "Pro
bing Gravity with Large-Scale Structure" - Fabian Schmidt (Caltech)
CREATED:20111205T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Testing our theory of gravity\, General Relativity (GR)\, has
become one of the main goals of cosmology\, motivated in part by the di
scovery that our Universe is accelerating. Given that gravity is the mai
n force governing the evolution of large-scale structure in the Universe
\, the latter can in principle be used to put precision constraints on g
ravity\, probing scales ten orders of magnitude larger than those of cla
ssical Solar System tests. I will explain why this is a very challenging
task\, and show how analytical models and numerical simulations in conj
unction with current data have enabled us take first steps in this direc
tion. I will also show the fascinating prospects for upcoming\, much lar
ger data sets\, such as that from the Dark Energy Survey.

SUMMARY:QI/AMO Seminar:"Generation and Control of Entangled States of Lig
 ht using Four-Wave Mixing"
CREATED:20120125T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:The field of quantum information holds the promise of harness
ing quantum resources to provide secure communications\, perform complex
calculations\, and enhance the sensitivity of measurements. Among thos
e resources\, one of the most important is entanglement\, which is chara
cterized by correlations stronger than are allowed classically. Due to
its fundamental role in quantum information science\, the generation and
control of entangled states of light are active areas of research. In
this talk I will show that non-degenerate four-wave mixing (4WM) in rubi
dium vapor has applications in both of these areas. In the first part o
f the talk I will give a brief introduction into the topic of the genera
tion and characterization of entangled states of light known as twin bea
ms. I will show how it is possible to use 4WM to generate twin beams an
d will describe the advantages that are obtained with the use of this no
nlinear process. In the second part of the talk I will present two appl
ications of 4WM in quantum information: obtaining the best possible copy
  of a quantum state\, i.e.\, a quantum cloner\, and controlling the prop
agation velocity of the light carrying the entanglement\, i.e.\, a quant
um buffer. I will finish by giving a quick overview of current research
projects that use twin beams for applications such as the calibration o
f photodiodes and the enhancement of the sensitivity of a measurement.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium "Micromechanics: A new quantum technology"
CREATED:20111128T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:That an object can be in two distinct places simultaneously i
s a consequence of quantum theory and a fact routinely invoked to accoun
t for the behavior of electrons and atoms. Nevertheless\, these superpos
itions are in conflict with our everyday experience. What is the largest
and most tangible object that can be prepared in such a superposition?
This question has motivated researchers to fabricate micron-scale mechan
ical resonators and coax them towards the regime of quantum behavior. In
deed micro-mechanical devices recently reached the quantum regime. In th
is talk\, I will describe how we use electricity to achieve the exquisit
e control and measurement of micromechanical resonators necessary to rea
ch the quantum regime. Having entered this regime\, we are now able to p
ursue many exciting ideas. We endeavor to use mechanical resonators as l
ong-lived memories for the quantum states of electrical circuits. In add
ition\, we are developing the technology to transfer quantum states betw
een two incompatible systems via a mechanical intermediary. We may even
be able to test quantum theory itself in an unexplored region of mass an
 d size scales.

SUMMARY:Condensed Matter Seminar: "The Photon Shell Game\, the Quantum vo
n Neumann Architecture\, and the Surface Code with Superconducting Circu
 its"
CREATED:20110922T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:Superconducting quantum circuits have made significant advanc
es over the past decade\, allowing more complex and integrated circuits
that perform with good fidelity. We have recently implemented a machine
comprising seven quantum channels\, with three superconducting resonator
s\, two phase qubits\, and two zeroing registers. After introducing the m
ain concepts on superconducting quantum circuits\, I will explain the de
sign and operation of our quantum machine.I will first show how a single
microwave photon |1> can be prepared in one resonator and coherently tr
ansferred between the three resonators of the machine\, thus allowing us
to realize a quantum register on a chip [+].I will then demonstrate how
our machine can be used as the quantum-mechanical analog of the von Neu
mann computer architecture\, which for a classical computer comprises a
central processing unit and a memory holding both instructions and data.
The quantum version comprises a quantum central processing unit (quCPU)
that exchanges data with a quantum random-access memory (quRAM) integra
ted on one chip\, with instructions stored on a classical computer. I wi
ll also present a proof-of-concept implementation of a code that involve
s all seven quantum elements: (1)\, Preparing an entangled state in the
 quCPU\, (2)\, writing it to the quRAM\, (3)\, preparing a second state i
 n the quCPU\, (4)\, zeroing it\, and\, (5)\, reading out the first state
stored in the quRAM [*].Finally\, I will demonstrate that the quantum v
on Neumann machine provides one unit cell of a two-dimensional qubit-res
onator lattice that can be used for surface code quantum computing. This
  will allow\, (1)\, the realization of a scalable\, fault-tolerant quant
um processor with the most forgiving error rates to date and\, (2)\, the
possibility to emulate nontrivial many-body systems.

SUMMARY:Special Biophysics Seminar "Opening Windows into the Cell: The Mo
 lecular Architecture of Nuclear Transport"
CREATED:20120125T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is one of the largest macromol
ecular machines in the cell\, composed of hundreds of proteins\, selecti
vely controlling all traffic between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The
architecture of the NPC is central to understanding nuclear transport. H
owever\, due to its sheer size\, its local environment and its dynamic n
ature\, determining its structure at molecular resolution remains a chal
lenge for conventional techniques. Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) pr
ovides unprecedented insights into the 3-D macromolecular organization o
f cells in their native state\, yet the thickness of most cells makes th
em inaccessible to cryo-ET. I will show how focused ion beam (FIB) mill
ing can be used to prepare 200-500 nm lamellae from intact cells\, openi
ng large windows into the cell's interior\, exposing their landscapes a
t molecular resolution. Combining FIB milling\, cryo-ET\, and image proc
essing enables the study of the NPC in its native environment\, free of
the distortions caused by purification. This approach has not only revea
led the NPC architecture at unparalleled resolution\, but also captured
different conformational states in action. I will discuss how the struct
ure obtained by cryo-ET will serve as a scaffold upon which data from a
wide range of techniques can be integrated\, unveiling the molecular mec
 hanisms of nuclear transport.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: "The Physics of Music & Musical Instruments"

DESCRIPTION:I have been teaching two lecture/demo/lab courses (a freshman
"discovery" & an upper-level undergrad course) on the Physics of Music/
Musical Instruments for over a decade now\, which has been *great* fun\,
but during this time\, a great many questions have also arisen - which
have been truly fascinating to me to pursue... A few such questions are
:Why is music seemingly *so* important to us human beings? Why do we like
/enjoy music *so* much - are there in fact quantitative reasons for this
? Is music actually beneficial to us in any way\, or is it just "fluff"
 - i.e. "auditory cheesecake"\, as some have suggested...Why do we hear i
n the frequency range (20 Hz - 20 KHz) that we do?Why not higher or lowe
r? Why do we have the musical scale(s) that we do?Why do we have the mus
ical instruments that we do?If intelligent life exists elsewhere in the
universe\, would those beings also have music? If so\, what would their
music sound like? Are there physics answers to these questions? Please com

ffords a systematic theory of quantum dualities and incorporates classic
al dualities as well into one unified framework. This new algebraic appr
oach is remarkably successful in extending powerful duality techniques t
o the context of topologically quantum ordered systems and quantum infor
mation processing\, and affords a compelling foundation for a general th
eory of exact dimensional reduction or holographic correspondences. Many
systems however display only approximate dimensional reduction\, and so
I will present general inequalities -some of them based on entanglement
 - linking quantum systems of different spatial dimensionality. These ine
qualities provide bounds on the expectation values of observables and co
rrelators that can enforce an effective dimensional reduction. In closin
g I will discuss some implications for (topological) quantum memories.

SUMMARY:Special ICMT Seminar: "The ferromagnetic random field Ising mode
 l"
CREATED:20120103T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:The random field Ising model is central to the study of disor
dered systems. The model describes well various physical\, biological\,
and even social systems\, but for long its realization in ferromagnetic
systems was hindered by the difficulty to produce locally random magneti
c fields. Here I will show how the interplay between an applied transver
se field and the dipolar interactions transforms spatial disorder into a
n effective random field\, in both spin glass and ferromagnetic Ising di
polar systems. I wlil then discuss a novel disordering mechanism of the
ferromagnetic phase in ferromagnets with an underlying spin glass phase\
, and its relation to recent peculiar experimental results claiming a li
near dependence of the ferromagnetic transition temperature on the rando
 m field.

SUMMARY:Special Biological Physics Seminar "Chromosome\, Cell Cycle and E
ntropy (or: why I love E. coli)"
CREATED:20120202T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Before an Escherichia coli cell divides to give two viable da
ughter cells\, the constantly growing cell must replicate\, topologicall
y decatenate\, and spatially segregate its genetic materials. These proc
esses pose non-trivial\, conceptual questions at the interface between p
hysics and biology. In this talk\, I will discuss the questions in two i
ndependent and yet related contexts. In the first part\, I will focus on
the spatial processes involving chromosomes\, and present experimental
and theoretical results to show that the bacterial chromosome behaves as
a loaded entropic spring\, strongly confined by a crowded environment i
nside the cell. The second part concerns temporal processes the cell mus
t coordinate\, and I will show that E. coli possess a very robust mechan
ism of growth. I will conclude with one of the long-standing questions i
n biology\, which we physicists may view as a "causality" problem

SUMMARY:Astrophysics Colloquium: Yoram Lithwick\, University of Toronto\
, CITA: " Secular Chaos: Formation of Hot Jupiters and the Organization
  of Planetary Systems"
CREATED:20120105T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:In a planetary system with well-spaced planets\, there is a n
onlinear instability that can lead to chaotic behaviour. One of the pla
nets can gradually become unstable\, in which case its orbit becomes hig
hly eccentric. This "secular chaos" is known to be responsible for the
eventual destabilization of Mercury in our own Solar System. Here I foc
us on systems with multiple giant planets. I show that after an extende
d period of eccentricity diffusion\, the inner planet's pericentre can a
pproach the star to within a few stellar radii. Strong tidal interaction
s with the star then pull the planet inward\, creating a hot Jupiter. I
n contrast to other proposed channels for the production of hot Jupiters
\, such a scenario (which I term "secular migration") explains a range o
 f observations: the pile-up of hot Jupiters at 3-day orbital periods\, t
he fact that hot Jupiters are in general less massive than other RV plan
ets\, that they may have misaligned inclinations with respect to stellar
spin\, and that they have few easily detectable companions (but may hav
e giant companions in distant orbits).I will also show that if an unstab
le planet escapes the influence of the other planets\, the remaining pla
netary system becomes increasingly stable. This may explain the stabl
 e architecture of observed systems.

SUMMARY:CPLC Seminar: "Single molecule studies on the structure and assem
 bly of nucleosomes"
CREATED:20110921T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:Nucleosomes are the fundamental packing units of the eukaryot
ic genome. The structure and structural dynamics of nucleosomes are at t
he core of gene regulation mechanisms. We studied the structure and asse
mbly of nucleosomes and how they are altered by DNA methylation or histo
ne acetylation based on single molecule fluorescence measurements. Our s
tudy revealed that these chromatin modifications induce changes in the s
tructure and assembly of nucleosomes that may directly contribute to the
formation of repressive or open chromatin conformations.
