SUMMARY:Condensed Matter Seminar: The light that Resonant Inelastic X-ray
Scattering throws on High Tc Cuprates
CREATED:20090824T120000Z
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) provides direct ac
cess to elementary charge\, spin and orbital excitations in complex oxid
es. As a technique it has made tremendous progress with the advent high-
brilliance synchrotron X-ray sources. The figure of merit for so-called
K-edge RIXS experiments on the cuprates (inelastic count-rate/energy res
olution) has for instance improved by four orders of magnitude in the la
st ten years. Theorists in the mean time\, asked themselves to which low
-energy correlation functions RIXS is precisely sensitive. I will show t
hat depending on the experimental RIXS set up\, the measured charge dyna
mics can include charge-transfer\, d-d and orbital excitations [1\,2]. R
IXS also allows to probe spin dynamics\, in particular the dispersion of
magnons and bi-magnons [3\,4\,5]. Based on these observations\, I will
discuss the novelties that RIXS reveals on the spin dynamics of High Tc
cuprates.[1] J. van den Brink and M. van Veenendaal\, Europhysics Letter
