This has been long understood in the case of class in equality\, where the US is very different than Europe in what ways of ta lking about social justice are most familiar. But race\, nationality or ethnicity and gender are also framed differently in different political systems and also reflect social struggles of long historical duration. I n this talk\, I draw attention to the ways that struggles for gender equ ality have intersected with those for class and race justice and continu e intersectionally to shape the meaning of all forms of inequality. To i llustrate this\, I contrast the race-centered framing of gender equality as the outcome of dismantling stereotypes and ending discrimination tha t dominates in the US with the class-centered framing of gender equality as the outcome of effective government actions to promote women's full participation in governance and equal inclusion in the distribution of s ocial goods that characterizes Germany. I suggest that the EU mixes thes e models in a uniquely hybrid model which offers both potential and risk s for actually reducing inequalities in its member states. I point to th e problems of growing class inequality in the US and growing racializati on of religious minorities in Europe as intersecting dangerously with ge nder inequalities in both parts of the world.SPEAKER BIO:Myra Marx Ferre e is the Alice H. Cook Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisco nsin-Madison and Director of the European Union Center of Excellence the re. She is a long-time student of women's movements\, especially in the US\, Germany\, and the EU\, and her book\, Varieties of Feminism: German Gender Politics in Global Perspective is out this month from Stanford U niversity Press. In addition\, she has authored numerous articles on Ger man feminist politics in German Politics & Society\, Social Politics\, G ender & Society\, and the American Sociological Review. O fficially ten people died from burns or suffocation\, and hundreds were treated in hospitals. Over two hundred houses that survived have to demo lished. All life in the nearest river\, the Marcal\, a tributary of the Danube\, have been extinguished--fish\, birds\, insects\, and plants. Ac cording to government officials\, this is Hungary's worst ecological dis aster. The talk will review the historical context of this disaster focu sing\, first\, on the company and its technology\, including the causes of the spill\; second\, on changes in related environmental policies\, f rom state socialism through EU accession\; and third\, and most importan tly\, on the political and ideological mining of the spill both by the n ationalist government and liberals. The transactions in question involve American\, Norwegian and Du tch capital and concern land acquisitions for the cultivation of rice\, jatropha and mangoes respectively. The studies use qualitative methods\, involving focus group discussions with men and women farmers and with t he chiefs\, as well as in-depth interviews with a selected number of mal e and female farmers in several communities. In all three cases\, there have been significant losses of common spaces\, with gendered impacts. B ecause of their reproductive roles\, the sexual division of labour in pr oduction and gender inequalities in land tenure systems\, women have par ticular interests in the commons over and above men?s use of such spaces . The three cases allow for a comparison of different land tenure system s\, the impacts on locals as well as settlers and the particularities in the roles and discourses of the state\, chiefs\, the leadership of the local land-owning groups and the urban elite. In addition\, they highlig ht the specificities of the land transactions\, their business models an d their implications for the pre-existing land tenure systems\, food sec urity\, and the wider political economy. SPEAKER BIO: Dzodzi Tsikata is head of the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) at the Uni versity of Ghana and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Statis tical\, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). She has a Ph.D. in social science from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her research interest s are the areas of gender and livelihoods\, development policy\, and lan d tenure and food security.
