SUMMARY:Water Quality Seminar Series
CREATED:20090828T130000Z
DESCRIPTION:Putting Freshwater Animals in Salty Water: The Ecotoxicology
of Major IonsOrdinarily benign major ions\, and therefore\, total dissol
ved solids (TDS)\, which is essentially the sum of the concentrations of
  all common ions (e.g.\, sodium\, potassium\, calcium\, magnesium\, chlo
ride\, sulfate\, and bicarbonate) in fresh waters\, can reach concentrat
ions in wastewater discharges that severely impair sensitive aquatic spe
cies. In this seminar\, I will discuss various aspects of the ecotoxicol
ogy of elevated TDS including: sources of elevated TDS\, how water quali
ty parameters interact to ameliorate or exacerbate toxicity\, current re
gulatory issues\, sub-lethal effects\, and potential flaws in model syst
ems currently used to assess toxicity.
