SUMMARY:Why the Heck is it Snowing?!?
CREATED:20111101T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of I
llinois recently completed a two year field study of winter storms over
the Great Plains. A suite of unique specialized ground-based and airborn
e high-resolution radars opened a new window of understanding concerning
the origin and growth of snow\, thundersnow\, aircraft icing\, and othe
r exciting properties of winter cyclones. In my talk\, we will peer thro
ugh that window together and investigate the science of snowstorms.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Seminar series - Implications of Biofuel Water Foo
 tprint in Water Sustainability
CREATED:20120131T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Biofuel water demand has gain increasing attention since the
energy authorities emphasized the importance of reducing the national de
pendence on foreign energy. Water conservation has been a key factors in
achieving sustainable biofuel production from agricultural residue and
other advanced feedstock. In our latest study\, we establish a standardi
zed water footprint framework aiming to quantify blue\, green\, and gray
water associated with second-generation and advanced biofuel at county-
level resolution for the entire United States. We quantify the water foo
tprint covering the hydrologic cycle\, irrigation\, process water use\,
and grey water discharge for the major life-cycle stages of the biofuels
: feedstock production\, feedstock transportation\, and feedstock conver
sion. Five major types of feedstock are analyzed including corn\, corn s
tover\, soybean\, wheat straw\, and algae. We examine the effects of spa
tial resolution on shaping water footprint. To put biofuel water demand
into perspective\, we further compare the water footprint of the biofuel
generated from each feedstock with local effective rain. The results in
dicate that green water use accounts for a significant portion of the wa
ter use in current cellulosic feedstock development though most of the p
ast water conservation efforts were made to increase blue water use effi
ciency. Local water limitation should always serve as an important crite
rion while projecting future biofuel production potential. This seminar w
ill be broadcast live on the ISTC website www.istc.illinois.edu and also

SUMMARY:Sustainability Seminar series - Trends in Multi-Source\, Multi-Us

 n
CREATED:20111220T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:The days of limitless\, inexpensive municipal water are comin
g to an end. The cost and availability of fresh water is seen as the ne
xt most important crisis in our country after energy. According to Fort
une magazine\, 'water promises to be to the 21st century what oil was to
the 20th.' Yet every day commercial properties use billions of gallons
of potable water to flush toilets\, water landscaping and cool the air.
There is growing interest in onsite water reuse systems that capture\,
treat\, store and recycle rainwater\, greywater\, stormwater and other
sources to flush toilets\, irrigate landscaping\, make-up cooling tower
water and other non-potable uses. Water Harvesting Solutions (Wahaso) s
pecializes in these systems for commercial and institutional properties\
, and has designed and installed hundreds systems nationwide. Points of
discussion in this presentation will be:''Water Harvesting' trends and d
rivers 'System Development Process'Scoping Stage - Tools for Designing a
n Efficient System 'Understanding different sources and uses for harvest
ed onsite treated water'Understanding major system components 'Applying
the concepts ' Case Study ExamplesThis seminar will be broadcast live on

SUMMARY:Sustainability Seminar series - Splitting any kind of water with
global-scale\, earth-abundant\, light\, recyclable metals to make hydrog
en\, heat\, and potable water on demand.
CREATED:20120116T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Any future successful global-scale energy technology must sat
isfy three criteria: (1) be indefinitely recyclable\, (2) be capable of
safe energy storage\, and (3) be capable of safe transport. We believe t
hat an aluminum based energy technology can satisfy these criteria. Firs
t\, even though the current Al industry does not practice large scale re
cycling\, there are no barriers to do this. Also\, Al metal and its oxid
es and hydroxides are already safely transported. However\, in spite of
the good mass energy density and very high volumetric energy density of
Al\, it is not yet part of the energy storage leg of the criteria triang
le.We show both theoretically and experimentally that Al meets all the c
onditions of a successful energy technology. Specifically we can make bu
lk\, Al rich alloys that will split any kind of water to make hydrogen\,
heat and recyclable aluminum hydroxide. This breakthrough has opened a
new pathway to finally realize a hydrogen energy economy. As an example\
, it will enable feasible solar and wind energy technologies by using th
e intermittent electricity generated by solar cells and wind turbines to
reduce aluminum hydroxides back to aluminum by fused salt electrolysis.
Once you have plentiful hydrogen and heat you can have sustainable remo
te power and potable water. This seminar will be broadcast live on the
ISTC website www.istc.illinois.edu and also archived there for later vie
 wing.
