CREATED:20120115T110000Z DESCRIPTION:This talk discusses the notion of 'complete' acquisition in b ilingualism and presents a model that brings together the linguistic\, p sychological and social factors that affect language learning and use. T he author reviews previous empirical work in these three areas and prese nts original empirical data from the knowledge and use that early and la te Spanish-English bilinguals have of optional structures in the Spanish pronominal system\, specifically that of clitic-climbing. This data of fers evidence that 'complete' acquisition for a bilingual may diverge fr om that of a monolingual on the basis of a variety of cognitive and expe riential factors associated with the age of exposure to bilingualism. In using grammatical optionality to test the linguistic\, psychological an d social knowledge that different types of bilinguals have of language\, we can make improvements in the areas of pedagogical\, clinical and the oretical work that often use a monolingual norm as the learning objectiv e in the process and development of language by early and late learners.
