SUMMARY:TSS Seminar: Quanyan Zhu: "Game-Theoretic Gestaltism on Resilient
  Cyber-Physical Systems"
CREATED:20120131T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: The goal of this talk is to address the challenges
in the design and analysis of resilient cyber-physical systems. We aim t
o establish a comprehensive theoretical framework that can serve as the
foundation for resilience engineering. Our approach starts with a hierar
chical viewpoint toward complex systems that comprise multiple agents an
d multiple layers. Game-theoretic frameworks can be developed at each la
yer to model its pivotal functionality. Such frameworks can be further e
xtended to include cross-layer influences between the layers. We apply z
ero-sum differential game theory to the physical and control layers for
robust control design\, and applied competitive Markov decision processe
s (MDPs) to the cyber level for the design of effective cyber security p
olicies. The coupling between the two game-theoretic frameworks leads to
a cross-layer control and cyber policy design. This holistic approach e
nables a game-theoretic gestaltism on resilient system analysis and desi
gn.BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Quanyan Zhuis currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Depar

SUMMARY:Cisco: Security Exploits and What They Teach Us
CREATED:20120207T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:Those who fail to learn from security failures are d
oomed to become future victims. From ancient times to modern\, security
blunders can teach one how to avoid repeating past mistakes. We will exam
ine cases where flawed security allowed people to compromise the integri
ty of systems (civic\, political\, mechanical\, digital\, etc.). We will
draw on both historical examples as well as numerous cases where the sp
eaker\, employed in the role of a security analyst\, observed spectacula
r blunders made by people and organizations that should have known bette
r.Applying these lessons to your own engineering work will help you craf
t systems with an increased degree of reliability\, availability and int
egrity. Moreover\, as a consumer of services\, these lessons will help y
ou become a more discriminating consumer and observer\, security wise.Bi
ography:Landon serves as a technical leader in Cisco's Server Access and
Virtualization Group. His Cisco responsibilities encompass high-'&#8208
 \;performance computing\, cryptography\, and security analysis. Landon
is an Astronomer who is studying the inner solar system. He has made ast
ronomical observations all over the world: most recently from the Libyan
Sahara\, the Chinese Gobi\, the Eniwetok atoll\, from French Polynesia
and from the South Pole. Landon graduated from Linfield College with a B
A in Math/Physics. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society a

DESCRIPTION:Illinois-Intel Parallelism Center (I2PC) Distinguished Speake
 r SeriesThursday February 16th\, 4pm CST\, Room SC3405 Concurrenc
 y-bug detection\, diagnosis\, and fixing Shan Lu
                University of WisconsinABSTRACT: Synchronization mistakes
in multi-threaded software (i.e.\, concurrency bugs) are big threats to
system reliability in the multi-core era. They are difficult to detect
before code release because of the huge state space of multi-threaded so
ftware. Once released\, they lead to non-deterministic production-run fa
ilures that are difficult to diagnose. When eventually detected\, they c
ost a lot of manual effort to fix because of the inherent complexity of
synchronization. In this talk\, I will describe our research on detecting
\, diagnosing\, and fixing concurrency bugs. I will first present our ef
fect-oriented concurrency-bug detection tools\, ConMem and ConSeq. These
tools identify potential failure sites in a program and look for suspic
ious interleavings that could lead to these failures. The uniqueeffect-o
riented perspective enables ConMem and ConSeq to detect concurrency bugs
before they manifest with higher coverage and accuracy than traditional
cause-oriented approaches. I will then briefly discuss our sampling-bas
 ed production-run concurrency-bug failure diagnosis tool\, CCI\, and our
automatic concurrency-bug fixing tool\, AFix. I willconclude the talk b
y discussing other on-going research in my group.BIO: Shan Lu is an Assi
stant Professor of Computer Sciences at University ofWisconsin\, Madison
.She earned her Ph.D. at University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign\, in
2008\, where she completed a thesis on "Understanding\, Detecting\, and
Exposing Concurrency Bugs".At University of Wisconsin\, her group works
on detecting\, diagnosing\, and fixing concurrency bugs and performance
bugs. Shan Lu won NSF Career Award in 2010. Her research group is curren
tly supported by Claire Boothe Luce faculty fellowship and NSF grants.==

SUMMARY:HITC Seminar: Bill Hersh
CREATED:20120118T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:Title:Secondary Use of Clinical Data from Electronic Health R
ecords: The TREC Medical Records TrackAbstract:The growing use of the el
ectronic health record (EHR) to document clinical care provides new oppo
rtunities for other beneficial uses of EHR data. These include biomedica
l research\, quality measurement and improvement\, and public health sur
veillance. In this talk\, Dr. William Hersh will provide an overview of
the motivations\, techniques\, and challenges for secondary use of EHR d
ata. He will go into further detail on research in this area\, including
discussion of the Text Retrieval Conference (TREC) Medical Records Trac
k\, a challenge evaluation that uses a large test collection of de-ident
ified records to identify patients who might be eligible for clinical st
udies.Bio:William Hersh is Professor and Chair in the Department of Medi
cal Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology in the School of Medicine at Ore
gon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland\, OR. Dr. Hersh is an
innovator and leader in the field of biomedical and health informatics.
He received his BS in Biology from the University of Illinois Champaign
-Urbana in 1980 and his MD from University of Illinois Chicago in 1984.
After completing residency training in internal medicine at University o
f Illinois Hospital in 1987\, he completed a Fellowship in Medical Infor
matics at Harvard University in 1990. He then joined the faculty of the
OHSU School of Medicine\, where he rose through the ranks to Professor a
nd became the inaugural Chair of the Department of Medical Informatics &
Clinical Epidemiology that was launched in 2003.Dr. Hersh is known for
his research in several areas. His earliest and still most productive ar
ea has been information retrieval (IR)\, where he has authored over 125
peer-review scientific papers as well as published the book\, Informatio
n Retrieval: A Health & Biomedical Perspective\, which is now in its thi
rd edition published by Springer. Dr. Hersh has also played leadership r
oles in several large IR challenge evaluations\, including the TREC Geno
mics Track\, the ImageCLEF Medical Image Retrieval Task\, and the TREC M
edical Records Track.Another area of research that Dr. Hersh has pursued
is informatics workforce development. This derived from his work in dev
eloping educational programs in the field at OHSU\, and has helped secur
e federal funding to increase the workforce as well as establish clinica
l informatics as a new medical subspecialty approved by the American Boa
rd of Medical Specialties. Dr. Hersh is also active in clinical research
informatics\, providing various leadership roles in informatics in the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical & Translational Research Aw
ard (CTSA) Program.Dr. Hersh is also known for his innovation and leader
ship in biomedical and health informatics education. He directs the OHSU
Graduate Program in Biomedical Informatics\, which is one of the larges
t in the country. The program trains future researchers through its PhD
and postdoc master's program as well as future practitioners through its
master's and certificate programs. He spearheaded the delivery of the l
atter programs via distance learning. Dr. Hersh also partnered with the
American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) to launch the 10x10 ('te
n by ten') program\, which has provided a detailed introduction to infor
matics for over 1200 health care and other professionals.Dr. Hersh is al
so providing leadership in two projects related to developing and expand
ing the health information technology (HIT) workforce to achieve 'meanin
gful use' of electronic health records under the stimulus bill. One proj
ect funds 148 students in the OHSU program over three years\, while the
other develops curricula for community college programs for shorter-term
programs. The latter has resulted in a national HIT curriculum that is
available to all educators and not just community colleges.Dr. Hersh has
won numerous awards for his innovations. Most prominent among these are
the OHSU Faculty Senate Distinguished Faculty Award for his educational
accomplishments in 2007 and the AMIA Donald A.B. Lindberg Award for Inn
ovation in Informatics in 2008. Dr. Hersh has also been named to the Mod
ern Healthcare Top 25 Clinical Informaticists in 2010 and 2011.

SUMMARY:HITC Seminar: Kevin Fu
CREATED:20120118T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:Title: Trustworthy Medical Device SoftwareAbstract: The Insti
tute of Medicine commissioned my 2011 report on the role of trustworthy
software in the context of U.S. medical device regulation. This talk wil
l provide a glimpse into the risks\, benefits\, and regulatory issues fo
r innovation of trustworthy medical device software.Today\, it would be
difficult to find medical device technology that does not critically dep
end on computer software. The technology enables patients to lead more n
ormal and healthy lives. However\, medical devices that rely on software
(e.g.\, drug infusion pumps\, linear accelerators) continue to injure o
r kill patients in preventable ways-- despite the lessons learned from t
he tragic radiation incidents of the Therac-25 era. The lack of trustwor
thy medical device software leads to shortfalls in properties such as sa
 fety\, effectiveness\, dependability\, reliability\, usability\, securit
 y\, and privacy.Come learn a bit about the science\, technology\, and po
licy that shapes medical device software.Bio: Kevin Fu is an Associate P
rofessor of Computer Science and adjunct Associate Professor of Electric
al & Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Pr
of. Fu makes embedded computer systems smarter: better security and safe
ty\, reduced energy consumption\, faster performance. His most recent co
ntributions on trustworthy medical devices and computational RFIDs appea
r in computer science and medical conferences and journals. The research
is featured in critical articles by the NYT\, WSJ\, and NPR.Prof. Fu se
rved as a visiting scientist at the Food & Drug Administration\, the Bet
h Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard Medical School\, and MIT CS
AIL. He is a member of the NIST Information Security and Privacy Advisor
y Board. Prof. Fu received a Sloan Research Fellowship\, NSF CAREER awar
d\, and best paper awards from various academic silos of computing. He w
as named MIT Technology Review TR35 Innovator of the Year. Prof. Fu rece
ived his Ph.D. in EECS from MIT when his research pertained to secure st
orage and web authentication. He also holds a certificate of achievement

SUMMARY:2012 Symposium on Application Accelerators in High-Performance Co
 mputing
CREATED:20111201T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:What do GPUs\, FPGAs\, vector processors and other exotic spe
cial-purpose chips have in common? They are advanced processor architect
ures that the scientific community is using to accelerate computationall
y demanding applications. While high-performance computing systems that
use application accelerators are still rare\, they will be the norm rath
er than the exception in the near future. The Symposium on Application A
ccelerators in High-Performance Computing brings together developers of
computing accelerators and end-users of the technology to exchange ideas
and learn about the latest developments in the field. The symposium focu
ses on the use of application accelerators in high-performance and scien
tific computing and issues that surround it. Topics of interest include:
novel accelerator processors\, systems\, and architecturesintegration of
accelerators with high-performance computing systemsprogramming models
for accelerator-based computinglanguages and compilers for accelerator-b
ased computingrun-time environments\, profiling and debugging tools for
accelerator-based computingscientific and engineering applications that
 use application accelerators
