SUMMARY:NRES Departmental Seminar
CREATED:20111031T090000Z
DESCRIPTION:Departmental Seminar by Dr. Kathryn Docherty\, Western Michig
an University.Title: Global Change Microbial Ecology: Why Microbial Resp
onses to Global Change Make a Difference.Microorganisms\, including Bact
eria\, Archaea and Microeukaryotes mediate the majority of Earth's bioge
ochemical cycles. They are the most diverse and abundant organisms on th
e planet\, and store the vast majority of global carbon\, nitrogen and p
hosphorus. However\, microorganisms are rarely considered when predictin
 g large-scale global change scenarios\, effects of land-use change\, or
trajectories for exotic species invasions. The results presented suggest
that microorganisms can play a crucial role\, at the continental scale\
, in all these processes. The first example is from the Jasper Ridge Glo
bal Change Experiment (JRGCE) which has manipulated multiple global chan
ge factors for over a decade in a California grassland ecosystem. Our re
sults suggest increased nitrogen deposition shifts the community of ammo
nia-oxidizing Bacteria at the Genus and Family levels\, resulting in an
overall shift in nitrification rate. The relationship of this rate to th
e specific microbial community members is stronger than the relationship
with overall ammonia-oxidizer abundance. This suggests that specific mi
crobial species respond to anthropogenic influences in different ways\,
which can result in large-scale shifts in function that can have ecosyst
em-level impacts. The second example is from the preliminary data collec
ted by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) which is invol
ved in a long-term monitoring project examining soil microbial communiti
es from 20 biomes throughout the United States. These results indicate t
hat similar microbial communities exist in drastically different ecotype
s\, and that pH and soil moisture are the main abiotic factors driving B
acterial and Fungal community structures. Similarly\, different ecotypes
are dominated by different metabolic pathways\, which can be related to
dominant microbial community members. These results suggest microbial c
ommunities are distinct to a biome based on abiotic factors. As a result
\, microbial communities may respond differently to anthropogenic influe
nces based on these predictive abiotic factors\, and not geographic loca
 tion.
