SUMMARY:"Mexican Indigenous Culture: Is it Harmful to your Health?"
CREATED:20091028T140000Z
DESCRIPTION:Postdoctoral Research Colloquium: In this talk I discuss the
pathologization of indigenous Mexican migrant culture in the United Stat
es by social service providers\, legal experts and other "public" servan
ts. As indigenous migration increases\, so do the cases in which their c
ultural practices and behaviors are defined as harmful to their health\,
that of their families\, and society at large. Responses to this alarmi
ng trend from within the community are rooted in the recuperation of ind
igenous identity. Does this response reinforce or undo the discourses th
at perceive indigenous culture as harmful?
