SUMMARY:Jerusalem Saved! Inness and the Spiritual Landscape
CREATED:20110621T080000Z
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of its 50th Anniversary\, Krannert Art Museum
celebrates the return of nineteenth century American artist George Inne
sss Evening Landscape\, a fragment from a monumental canvas entitled The
New Jerusalem\, after a miraculous conservation treatment at the Walter
s Art Museum in Baltimore\, Maryland. This focus exhibition reunites sur
viving portions of The New Jerusalem\, which was damaged in a roof colla
pse while on display at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1880.
The artist recovered the canvas from the rubble and cut it into at least
three paintings now divided between Baltimore and Urbana-Champaign. Bui
lding on recent scholarship by art historians Sally Promey\, Michael Qui
ck\, and former University of Illinois professor Rachel DeLue\, the stor
y of the loss and salvage of this key work in the artists career introdu
ces the visitor to the cultural context\, inspirational sources\, and sp
iritual color theory artfully encoded into Innesss landscapes.

SUMMARY:After Abstract Expressionism
CREATED:20111216T090000Z
DESCRIPTION:Post-war Abstract Expressionism had established itself as a p
opular style within the art world by the late 1950s. However\, at that t
ime many artists did not share the same interest in exploring the inner
creativity of the artist and began to challenge the Abstract Expressioni
sts by turning almost exclusively to culture. Instead of exploring the a
rtist's individuality\, these assemblage and Pop artists renewed a relat
ionship between art and everyday life by incorporating popular culture t
hrough the use of found objects and images from popular media. Artists c
ontinued to challenge how the meaning of works of art was uncovered duri
ng the radical 1960s and into the 1970s. Rather than finding meaning exc
lusively within the work\, artists placed more emphasis on the context i
n which the work of art existed. The context became increasingly more so
cial and political\, which pushed the boundaries of what constituted art
. This interrogation\, which ushered in the age of Postmodernism\, looke
d back to what the artist Marcel Duchamp confronted in the early twentie
th century. As artists began to use a diverse range of media\, they cont
inued to blur the lines of art and life. This installation from the muse
um's permanent collection highlights a broad range of artistic styles'ma
inly from the United States'during the late 1950s through the early 1980
s\, from Nouveau Ralisme to Pop Art and Minimalism. This selection\, inc
luding paintings\, sculpture\, and works on paper by Sam Francis\, Jaspe
 r Johns\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Kenneth Noland\, Robert R
auschenberg\, Niki de Saint Phalle\, and Frank Stella\, illustrates the
diverse ways that artists attacked notions of modernism.

SUMMARY:Carolee Schneemann: Within and Beyond the Premises
CREATED:20111216T090000Z
DESCRIPTION:A multidisciplinary artist\, Carolee Schneemann transformed t
he definition of contemporary art\, steering it toward a discourse on th
e body\, sexuality\, and gender. Schneemann initially examined these iss
ues through the medium of painting\, but in the early 1960s she began em
ploying other media'notably\, performance and installation art and docum
entary photography'to explore suppressive taboos and the relationship be
tween the individual human body and the social body. In the 1960s Schne
emann became part of the "experimental avant-garde" that included Robert
Rauschenberg\, Claes Oldenburg\, Allan Kaprow\, Jim Dine\, and other ar
tists interested in moving beyond Abstract Expressionism. She collaborat
ed with Trisha Brown\, Yvonne Rainer\, Steve Paxton\, and others to deve
lop the Judson Dance Theater and created performance productions involvi
ng multiple participants that she called "kinetic theater." Since the mi
d-1960s\, Schneemann has pursued film as a mixed-media art form\, and on
occasion\, within the context of performance. These works place her at
the forefront of experimental film's investigation of materiality and ab
straction\, as well as feminist content. Work of the late sixties and ea
rly eighties included protest work related to the Vietnam War and the at
rocities in Beirut. This retrospective exhibition presents Schneemann's
career from her earliest work to her most recent investigations\, ultim
ately revealing the artist's thought process. The exhibition includes pa
 intings\, drawings\, photography\, installation work\, video projections
\, and writings. Schneemann is a MFA graduate from the School of Art + D
esign\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Carolee Schneemann:
Within and Beyond the Premises\, curated by Brian Wallace\, was first o
rganized by and presented at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art\, State Uni
versity of New York at New Paltz from February 6 through July 25\, 2010.
This revised presentation has been organized by Krannert Art Museum in
partnership with the Henry Art Gallery\, University of Washington.

SUMMARY:Fifty Years: Contemporary American Glass from Illinois Collection
 s
CREATED:20111216T090000Z
DESCRIPTION:Fifty Years: Contemporary American Glass from Illinois Collec
tions is designed as a sampling tour through the world of American conte
mporary glass art\, showing the wide diversity of technique and vocabula
ry used by artists. In 1962 Harvey Littleton\, then ceramicist at the U
niversity of Wisconsin'Madison\, along with Dominick Labino\, vice-presi
dent of the Johns Manville Corporation\, developed a small glass furnace
on the grounds of the Toledo Museum of Art. This major development in g
lassmaking allowed an artist to create works in an independent studio se
tting. In addition\, Littleton organized two workshops to demonstrate th
e use of glass as an artistic medium. These workshops became the foundat
ion of the American Studio Glass Movement. In the beginning\, there wer
e two distinguishing characteristics of American studio glass: unificati
on of the roles of designer and maker and a focus on blown glass as dist
inct from other processes of forming objects from glass. Fifty years lat
er\, these two characteristics no longer describe American glass art. Bl
own glass is still a major thread\; however\, cast glass\, coldworked gl
ass\, and hot-sculpted glass are also important techniques of the moveme
nt. Although many artists design and make their own pieces\, others\, no
tably Dale Chihuly\, work with gaffers who make pieces under their direc
tion. This exhibition emphasizes the latter half of the movement's fift
y-year history in this country\, although a few early pieces are include
 d. The works are all drawn from the private collections of those living
in Illinois\, with a small bias towards artists with a connection to Ill
inois. A few of the artists represented in the exhibition\, including Ch
ihuly\, Marvin Lipofsky\, and Joel Philip Myers\, were students of or we
re directly inspired by Littleton\, while many others were students of L
ittleton's students. Almost all of the artists are actively producing gl
ass art today\, with the exception of Littleton\, Labino (who is decease
 d)\, and William Morris.
