SUMMARY:American Music Month
CREATED:20081022T130000Z
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln and His Music: Melodies that Moved the Man and the Na
 tionConcerts\, Lectures\, Master Classes\, and ExhibitionsThroughout his
tenure as U.S. President\, Lincoln heard music of every mood in the Whi
te House\, military camps and Washington\, DC. It was as varied as the P
residents and Americas kaleidoscopic musical tastes\, but most often it
spoke from the heart of a nation. Lincolns love of music was passionate
and the melodies and lyrics that were closest to him reflected the trage
dy\, joy\, defeat and victory experienced first hand by his nations peop
le. The University of Illinois and the Urbana-Champaign communitys 2008
American music celebrations explores the dynamic music traditions that w
ere embraced by Lincoln throughout his life and illustrates his legacys
impact on Americas music heritage today. Anthony Brown and his Asian Ame
rican Jazz Orchestra kicks off this years programming with an exciting c
oncert of music by Ellington\, Monk and Gershwin that artfully blends ea
stern and western performance cultures into his new Fifth Stream form of
jazz. A special performance forum dedicated to public school jazz bands
the following day will enable students to work directly with Brown and
his ensemble to develop a better understanding and appreciation of this
new jazz form and the strength of cultural diversity that it brings to t
he arts. Other events include a two-day festival for public and home-sch
ool string students\, a grand re-opening of the renovated Sousa Archives
and Center for American Music\, and the 4th annual Granny's Porch conce
rt at the Virginia Theater that kicks off a gala weekend of lectures and
a military dress ball at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center.
