 activist W. S. Merwin is the focus of this exhibition in the University 
 of Illinois Library's Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Mounted in conjunc
 tion with the Program in Medieval Studies conference\, "Translating the 
 Middle Ages" (click on the title link above)\, the exhibition explores M
 erwin's translations of works by the medieval Italian poet Dante Alighie
 ri\, particularly the "Purgatorio." Merwin's literary archive--one of th
 e University's preeminent collections--supplies a wealth of books\, manu
 scripts\, and ephemera for an intimate look at the creative process of l
 iterary translation.
