SUMMARY:CAS Eighteenth Annual Lecture--Searching for Unconventional Super
 conductors: A Quantum Map-Quest
CREATED:20080728T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Superconductivity is one of the most remarkable and potential
ly useful phenomena ever discovered --- the ability of a material to car
ry electrical current without any loss of energy by heating was an amazi
ng and unexpected observation first made almost 100 years ago.?? The mys
terious behavior of superconductors was finally explained 50 years ago b
y researchers at the University of Illinois\, led by two-time Nobel Laur
eate John Bardeen. ?? However\, in the last few decades several new cla
sses of superconductors have been discovered that exhibit even more exot
ic properties and even greater potential for technological impact.?? The
se "unconventional superconductors" are once again challenging our under
standing of condensed matter physics and the quantum world and may revol
utionize our lives through energy transmission\, secure communication\,
medical imaging\, and quantum computing. In this talk\, Professor Van H
arlingen will describe the quest to characterize the extraordinary and p
uzzling properties of the new superconductors and "zoom in" to the quant
um world that holds the key to understanding and exploiting them.
