SUMMARY:Framing Inequalities in the United States\, Germany\, and the Eur
opean Union: Race\, Class\, and Gender as Dynamic Intersections
CREATED:20111115T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:The term intersectionality invokes 'race\, class and
gender' as dimensions of inequality that operate in and through each ot
her\, but different understandings of inequality shape how they are addr
essed politically. This has been long understood in the case of class in
equality\, where the US is very different than Europe in what ways of ta
lking about social justice are most familiar. But race\, nationality or
ethnicity and gender are also framed differently in different political
systems and also reflect social struggles of long historical duration. I
n this talk\, I draw attention to the ways that struggles for gender equ
ality have intersected with those for class and race justice and continu
e intersectionally to shape the meaning of all forms of inequality. To i
llustrate this\, I contrast the race-centered framing of gender equality
as the outcome of dismantling stereotypes and ending discrimination tha
t dominates in the US with the class-centered framing of gender equality
as the outcome of effective government actions to promote women's full
participation in governance and equal inclusion in the distribution of s
ocial goods that characterizes Germany. I suggest that the EU mixes thes
e models in a uniquely hybrid model which offers both potential and risk
s for actually reducing inequalities in its member states. I point to th
e problems of growing class inequality in the US and growing racializati
on of religious minorities in Europe as intersecting dangerously with ge
nder inequalities in both parts of the world.SPEAKER BIO:Myra Marx Ferre

SUMMARY:AsiaLENS Screening: Follow Your Heart: China's New Youth Movement

CREATED:20120110T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:As China's modern society changes from communism to consumeri
sm\, a new urban youth movement has emerged with a greater sense of free
dom and optimism unknown in their parent's generation. By highlighting
successful and independent artists from China's national Hip-Hop scene\,
Duncan Jepson's film Follow Your Heart illustrates how this globally co
nnected generation of Chinese youth has embraced technology\, art\, and
consumer culture to express individuality in ways that clash with both t

SUMMARY:Agricultural policy reform in the European Union
CREATED:20120130T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: EU agricultural policy has undergone significant re
form over the past twenty years. EU policy-makers are currently engaged
in negotiations on the agricultural policy framework for the coming 2014
-20 period. This presentation will first discuss the significance and di
rection of the reforms to date\, drawing on a recent OECD report which h
as reviewed these efforts. We then review the relative importance of the
different drivers of reform\, including budget costs\, external pressur
es\, the role of the Commission and changing agendas\, in the decision-m
aking context of the European Union. We conclude by evaluating the likel
y significance of the current negotiations on the new CAP regulations fo
r the reform process.SPEAKER BIO: Alan Matthews is president of the Euro

SUMMARY:Joint Area Centers Symposium 2012: Cities and Inequalities in a T
 ransnational World
CREATED:20111011T140000Z
DESCRIPTION:Growing urbanization\, inequalities and migration are interco
nnected\, and in complex ways both cause and reflect the global restruct
uring of production and social reproduction. Because humankind has becom
e and might continue to be a species of city dwellers\, and because huma
nkind has become more than ever unequal in their conditions of life and
mobility across national borders\, the questions we ask about urbanizati
on and urban inequality in a transnational world are questions about the
human condition. What are the spatialities of these interconnected tren
ds and what are those emerging spaces? What are the new and persistent f
orms of inequality they produce? What are the ways in which inhabitants\
, vastly unequal in their conditions of life\, negotiate their livelihoo
ds\, security\, and dignity in these emerging urban spaces? How is trans
nationalism implicated in the production of these ascendant inequalities
?The Cities and Inequalities in a Transnational World conference seeks t
o better understand aspects of these unfolding processes of urbanization
and transnationalism that might prove similar or different from the pas
t and across regions. Through this conference we seek a global perspecti
ve grounded in the experiences of various regions of the world\, includi
ng Africa\, South and South East Asia\, Latin America\, Middle East\, Eu
ropean Union\; Russia and Eastern Europe. For more information on the sym

SUMMARY:Hebrew Literature Now: Symposium on Contemporary Israeli Literatu
 re
CREATED:20120213T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:"Hebrew Literature Now" is a 2 '-day International symposium
bringing together 14 of the foremost young scholars in Hebrew literature
to present and discuss contemporary literature being produced in Israel
today. No such scholarly event in the US or Israel has ever taken place
. The writers being considered have all been born since 1970\, and began
publishing during the 21st Century. Though much of this writing has had
a huge impact on the Israeli reading public\, shaped the translation an
d production industry in the US\, and reflects and entirely new kind of
discourse taking place in Israeli culture\, this writing has received no
scholarly attention to date. This symposium provides a venue for explor
ing this topic\, bringing together not only scholars but also writers\,
translators and publishers of this material\, many of whom also hold aca
demic positions at leading Israeli\, American and British institutions.
The keynote speaker\, Dan Laor\, brought in partly through the support
of the Israel Project through the Program in Jewish Culture and Society\
, is a renowned academic of Hebrew literature\, served as the Dean of Hu
manities at Tel Aviv University\, and is the editor of a leading literar
y journal. Through his work in all three of these areas\, he has fostere
d the creative talent of this new generation\, shaped their development
and provided venues (and other opportunities) for their publishing and s
uccess. Not only does this event intend to serve the scholarly communit
y\, including graduate and undergraduate students at UIUC. It also offer
s an opportunity to introduce a sample of this new writing to the public
. Preceding the opening reception\, there will be a public reading of a
sample of works\, provided (and translated) by many of the participants.
This incredibly exciting opportunity to showcase the writing that has r
edefined the reading public in Israel\, is offered in conjunction with s
upport from Dalkey Archive Press and their new series in Hebrew Literatu
re in Translation\, and the Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Lite
rature in Israel with whom they work closely. To view the complete prog

CREATED:20111028T140000Z
DESCRIPTION:On October 4\, 2010\, 700\,000 cubic meters (21m-24m cubic fe
et) of toxic sludge escaped from a reservoir of a Hungarian alumina plan
 t in the West of Hungary\, flooding three villages with a 25 km-long\, 1
 -2 km-wide\, and occasionally 7 ft-high cascade of highly caustic mud. O
fficially ten people died from burns or suffocation\, and hundreds were
treated in hospitals. Over two hundred houses that survived have to demo
lished. All life in the nearest river\, the Marcal\, a tributary of the
 Danube\, have been extinguished--fish\, birds\, insects\, and plants. Ac
cording to government officials\, this is Hungary's worst ecological dis
aster. The talk will review the historical context of this disaster focu
sing\, first\, on the company and its technology\, including the causes
of the spill\; second\, on changes in related environmental policies\, f
rom state socialism through EU accession\; and third\, and most importan
tly\, on the political and ideological mining of the spill both by the n
 ationalist government and liberals.

SUMMARY:Transnational Large-Scale Land Transactions\, the Disappearing Co
mmons and Livelihood Insecurities in Ghana: A Gender Perspective
CREATED:20120210T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Tsikata draws on her study of three cases in Ghana
to explore the gendered implications of recent land transactions for lan
d tenure security\, the availability of and access to the commons\, food
security and livelihood outcomes for men and women of different social
groups. The transactions in question involve American\, Norwegian and Du
tch capital and concern land acquisitions for the cultivation of rice\,
jatropha and mangoes respectively. The studies use qualitative methods\,
involving focus group discussions with men and women farmers and with t
he chiefs\, as well as in-depth interviews with a selected number of mal
e and female farmers in several communities. In all three cases\, there
have been significant losses of common spaces\, with gendered impacts. B
ecause of their reproductive roles\, the sexual division of labour in pr
oduction and gender inequalities in land tenure systems\, women have par
ticular interests in the commons over and above men?s use of such spaces
. The three cases allow for a comparison of different land tenure system
s\, the impacts on locals as well as settlers and the particularities in
the roles and discourses of the state\, chiefs\, the leadership of the
local land-owning groups and the urban elite. In addition\, they highlig
ht the specificities of the land transactions\, their business models an
d their implications for the pre-existing land tenure systems\, food sec
urity\, and the wider political economy. SPEAKER BIO: Dzodzi Tsikata is
head of the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) at the Uni
versity of Ghana and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Statis
tical\, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). She has a Ph.D. in social
science from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her research interest
s are the areas of gender and livelihoods\, development policy\, and lan
d tenure and food security. Publications  include Land Tenure\, Gender a
nd Globalization: Research and Analysis from Africa\, Asia\, and Latin A
merica (co-edited with Pamela Golah\, 2010)\, ?The Informal Economy and
Urban Women?s Livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s\,? in Razav
i (ed)\, The Gendered Impacts of Liberalization (2009)\, and Living in t
he Shadow of the Large Dams: Long Term Responses of Lakeside and Downstr
eam Communities of Ghana?s Volta River Project (2006). Currently\, she i
 s co-editing a special issue of Feminist Economics on Land\, Gender\, an
d Food Security\, funded by the Ford Foundation. Prof. Tsikata is the le
ad researcher in the IDRC funded study of employment agencies and women?
s work in the domestic and banking sectors in Ghana. She is a member of
the editorial advisory group of Feminist Africa\, Journal for Peasant St
udies\, African Sociological Review\, and Development and Democracy.Whil
e she is on campus Prof. Tsikata will also meet with students and facult
y for discussion of land tenure and food security issues. The best time

SUMMARY:Modern Greek Studies - Pantelis Lekkas\, Panteion University: "Na
tionalism Qua Modernization: The Greek War of Independence"
CREATED:20120123T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:This is an attempt to place the Greek War of Independence in
the wider context of the clash between Tradition and Modernity in the Eu
ropean periphery. It focuses on the ideology and the movement of nationa
lism--a phenomenon springing up in modernity and bringing forward the co
ncept of the nation as the proper unit of state organization. Being the
undisputed offspring of nationalism (which is to be understood as both t
he product and the vehicle of modernization)\, the Greek War of Independ
ence is discussed not solely in its political dimensions but also in ter
ms of its contribution to a much broader societal change. It is in this
sense that the Greek struggle for independence may be interpreted as the
specifically Greek exit from tradition as an undoubtedly unique event o
f momentous importance per se\, yet\, on the other hand\, as one more in
stance in a prolonged and very intricate process of societal transformat
 ions.
