SUMMARY:CTA Theoretical Astrophysics and General Relativity Seminar: "Pro
bing Gravity with Large-Scale Structure" - Fabian Schmidt (Caltech)
CREATED:20111205T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:Testing our theory of gravity\, General Relativity (GR)\, has
become one of the main goals of cosmology\, motivated in part by the di
scovery that our Universe is accelerating. Given that gravity is the mai
n force governing the evolution of large-scale structure in the Universe
\, the latter can in principle be used to put precision constraints on g
ravity\, probing scales ten orders of magnitude larger than those of cla
ssical Solar System tests. I will explain why this is a very challenging
task\, and show how analytical models and numerical simulations in conj
unction with current data have enabled us take first steps in this direc
tion. I will also show the fascinating prospects for upcoming\, much lar
ger data sets\, such as that from the Dark Energy Survey.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium "Micromechanics: A new quantum technology"
CREATED:20111128T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:That an object can be in two distinct places simultaneously i
s a consequence of quantum theory and a fact routinely invoked to accoun
t for the behavior of electrons and atoms. Nevertheless\, these superpos
itions are in conflict with our everyday experience. What is the largest
and most tangible object that can be prepared in such a superposition?
This question has motivated researchers to fabricate micron-scale mechan
ical resonators and coax them towards the regime of quantum behavior. In
deed micro-mechanical devices recently reached the quantum regime. In th
is talk\, I will describe how we use electricity to achieve the exquisit
e control and measurement of micromechanical resonators necessary to rea
ch the quantum regime. Having entered this regime\, we are now able to p
ursue many exciting ideas. We endeavor to use mechanical resonators as l
ong-lived memories for the quantum states of electrical circuits. In add
ition\, we are developing the technology to transfer quantum states betw
een two incompatible systems via a mechanical intermediary. We may even
be able to test quantum theory itself in an unexplored region of mass an
 d size scales.

SUMMARY:CosmoCoffee - A New Cosmological Distance Measure Using Active Ga
 lactic Nuclei
CREATED:20120212T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:Authors: D. Watson \, K. D. Denney \, M. Vestergaard \, T. M.
  Davis http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2011ApJ...740L..49WAccurate distan
ces to celestial objects are key to establishing the age and energy dens
ity of the Universe and the nature of dark energy. A distance measure us
ing active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been sought for more than forty yea
rs\, as they are extremely luminous and can be observed at very large di
stances. We report here the discovery of an accurate luminosity distance
measure using AGN. We use the tight relationship between the luminosity
of an AGN and the radius of its broad line region established via rever
beration mapping to determine the luminosity distances to a sample of 38
AGN. All reliable distance measures up to now have been limited to mode
rate redshift -- AGN will\, for the first time\, allow distances to be e
stimated to z~4\, where variations of dark energy and alternate gravity
 theories can be probed.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: "The Physics of Music & Musical Instruments"
CREATED:20111215T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:I have been teaching two lecture/demo/lab courses (a freshman
"discovery" & an upper-level undergrad course) on the Physics of Music/
Musical Instruments for over a decade now\, which has been *great* fun\,
but during this time\, a great many questions have also arisen - which
have been truly fascinating to me to pursue... A few such questions are
:Why is music seemingly *so* important to us human beings? Why do we like
/enjoy music *so* much - are there in fact quantitative reasons for this
? Is music actually beneficial to us in any way\, or is it just "fluff"
 - i.e. "auditory cheesecake"\, as some have suggested...Why do we hear i
n the frequency range (20 Hz - 20 KHz) that we do?Why not higher or lowe
r? Why do we have the musical scale(s) that we do?Why do we have the mus
ical instruments that we do?If intelligent life exists elsewhere in the
universe\, would those beings also have music? If so\, what would their
music sound like? Are there physics answers to these questions? Please com
e to this colloquium talk and find out!

SUMMARY:Astrophysics Colloquium: Yoram Lithwick\, University of Toronto\
, CITA: " Secular Chaos: Formation of Hot Jupiters and the Organization
  of Planetary Systems"
CREATED:20120105T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:In a planetary system with well-spaced planets\, there is a n
onlinear instability that can lead to chaotic behaviour. One of the pla
nets can gradually become unstable\, in which case its orbit becomes hig
hly eccentric. This "secular chaos" is known to be responsible for the
eventual destabilization of Mercury in our own Solar System. Here I foc
us on systems with multiple giant planets. I show that after an extende
d period of eccentricity diffusion\, the inner planet's pericentre can a
pproach the star to within a few stellar radii. Strong tidal interaction
s with the star then pull the planet inward\, creating a hot Jupiter. I
n contrast to other proposed channels for the production of hot Jupiters
\, such a scenario (which I term "secular migration") explains a range o
 f observations: the pile-up of hot Jupiters at 3-day orbital periods\, t
he fact that hot Jupiters are in general less massive than other RV plan
ets\, that they may have misaligned inclinations with respect to stellar
spin\, and that they have few easily detectable companions (but may hav
e giant companions in distant orbits).I will also show that if an unstab
le planet escapes the influence of the other planets\, the remaining pla
netary system becomes increasingly stable. This may explain the stabl
 e architecture of observed systems.
