SUMMARY:Robin Blackburn Lincoln Bicentennial Lecture\, 'The Republican an
d the Revolutionary: Abraham Lincoln and Karl Marx'
CREATED:20090303T130000Z
DESCRIPTION:Robin Blackburn looks at the interpretation of the US Civil W
ar offered by Karl Marx and his criticism of those like The Economist a
nd the London Times who saw it as a conflict essentially focussed on ec
onomic issues like the tariff. Marx helped to shape a distinctively Germ
an American understanding. He drafted the International Working Mens Ass
ociation address to Lincoln on the occasion of his re-election and recei
ved an indirect response from the president via the US ambassador in Lon
don. The lecture will look at the importance of different concepts of un
requited labour in the thinking of Marx and Lincoln and at the fate of t
hese ideas in the period of Reconstruction.
