SUMMARY:Interpreting ICES Student Ratings
CREATED:20120104T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Are you teaching well? Do you understand ICES results? This w
orkshop will explain the "Instructor & Course Evaluation System" (ICES)
used at UI. We'll begin with selecting ICES items and releasing informat
ion and end with interpreting ICES results. In between\, we'll investiga
te research related to student ratings of instruction--which variables a
ffect (or don't affect) ratings? How do ICES results relate to peer obse
rvations or alumni surveys? Feel free to bring your own ICES results an
 d ask questions!

what is working--and what is not working--in your class at a time when y

examine some basic forms that you can use and learn how to adapt them to
make the feedback from your students even more useful.

SUMMARY:Creating a Teaching Philosophy Statement that Describes and Docum
 ents Your Teaching
CREATED:20120109T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Teaching philosophy statements are requested for a variety of
reasons: job applications\, teaching awards\, grant proposals\, and for
mal evaluations. On our campus\, faculty submit a teaching statement as
part of the promotion and tenure packet and for the annual review in man
y of the departments. A teaching statement that accurately describes and
documents your teaching\, in addition\, your philosophy\, can promote r
eflection and new approaches for teaching. Based on the experiences of a
n administrator and a faculty developer\, the presenters will share the
characteristics of effective teaching statements and the most common are
as where they can be improved. This interactive workshop will be helpful
to those who want to begin or create their teaching philosophy statemen
ts. This session is targeted for faculty\, but any may attend. Resources

SUMMARY:Making Sense of it All: Using Concept Maps for Teaching and Learn
 ing
CREATED:20120106T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:In How Learning Works\, 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart
Teaching\, Susan Ambrose and her colleagues identify the following prin
ciple: "How students organize knowledge influences how they learn and ap
ply what they know."Students often struggle to connect new concepts to w
hat they already know. Concept mapping can help students make sense of c
omplex information by providing a means of organizing and representing k
nowledge. A visual format can help students gain an overview of the conc
epts being studied. Concept maps can be used as a tool for learning\, fo
r teaching\, and for assessment. In this interactive session\, you will
learn about these different ways to use concept maps in your course.

CREATED:20120103T110000Z
