SUMMARY:Global Security\, Climate Change\, and the Arctic: Implications
 of an Open Northwest Passage
CREATED:20091001T110000Z
DESCRIPTION:Rapidly melting ice in the Arctic Ocean offers promising oppo
rtunities for enhanced international marine shipping through the Northwe
st Passage. But it has also raised the specter of tensions among various
countries for access to corresponding transit routes and natural resour
ces. This symposium will provide scientific background and consider the
geopolitical implications of climate change and the opening of the North
west Passage.Discussion will examine the observed effects of global warm
ing on climate conditions in the region\, and will cover positions and p
erspectives of key actors such as the European Union and its member stat
es\, Nordic countries\, Russia\, Canada\, and the United States. Panelis
ts will offer assessments of recent developments associated with this em
erging issue\, as well as analysis of projected impacts on global securi
 ty\, foreign policy\, economics\, international maritime law\, and acces
 s to energy resources.
