DESCRIPTION:Abstract -- In addition to a vast amount of energy\, nuclear 
 technologies also produce lots of radiations such as neutrons and photon
 s. These seemingly 'waste products' in fact turn out to be unique tools 
 for materials characterization. For this purpose\, the accelerator-based
  Spallation Neutron Source (SNS)\, $1.4 billion effort\, the American la
 rgest unclassified science construction project\, has been built since 2
 000\, and recently becomes ready for the excellence in science to come. 
 In this seminar\, from my own experience\, I will try to give you a flav
 or of what cool stuffs can be done with it. In the past few years\, by u
 sing neutron scattering techniques\, we have extensively investigated th
 e unusual phase behavior of supercooled water in confined geometries\, s
 uch as nanophase materials\, cement paste and the vicinities of biomolec
 ular surfaces. Water is the most ubiquitous substance on earth\, and is 
 essential to sustain all known forms of life. However\, a coherent pictu
 re of the unusual phase behavior of water is so far lacking. Our experim
 ental discoveries suggest that water may have a second critical point\, 
 which may finally unravel water's mysteries. Now the theories we learned
  and the methods we developed while studying water can further help unde
 rstand and design magical futuristic complex materials such as high-entr
 opy and glassy alloys.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract -- During the last several years\, a new class of ga
 mma-ray detector\, called BazookaSPECT\, has been developed that combine
 s columnar scintillators\, image intensifiers\, and CCD/CMOS sensors for
  high-resolution imaging.  These detectors are of interest for pre-clini
 cal\, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and provide bet
 ter than an order-of magnitude improvement in detector resolution compar
 ed to conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT)-based gamma cameras.This t
 alk presents the current state of BazookaSPECT along with the developmen
 t and system integration of a stationary SPECT imager based on 20 Bazook
 aSPECT detectors\, called FastSPECT III.  During the design of FastSPECT
  III\, a new fabrication technique was developed for producing pinhole i
 maging apertures using 3D printers and casting in tungsten composites.  
 Also\, a system calibration and fast tomographic reconstruction method w
 as implemented that utilizes the highly parallelizable computing capabil
 ities of graphics processing units (GPUs).

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:Pulsed power and plasmas are well known in fusion an
 d defense applications.  More recent investigations have focused on thei
 r suitability for inducing multiscale changes in biological specimens fo
 r applications ranging from drug delivery to wound treatment.  The most 
 common and mature example of this approach is electroporation\, in which
  pulsed electric fields are applied to a tissue or cell suspension to ch
 arge the cell membranes to the point at which they open.  Recent modific
 ations have focused on shortening the pulse duration and increasing the 
 field strength to additionally manipulate intracellular organelles to ch
 ange cellular function.In this talk\, I discuss research conducted by ou
 r cross-disciplinary team of biologists\, plasma physicists\, and comput
 ational physicists.  First\, I will review our modeling efforts to predi
 ct the effects of AC (sinusoidal) fields on membrane pore formation and 
 assess potential implications on molecular delivery.  I will next summar
 ize results from a DARPA-funded study on plasma medicine\, where we asse
 ssed the efficacy and mechanism of plasma interactions with microorganis
 ms in vitro.  Specifically\, we observed deactivation of microorganisms 
 on surfaces with a strong sensitivity to the interface around the treate
 d cells\, suggesting potential challenges for in vivo applications.
