      1. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmArif Masud received Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics from Stanford University in April 1993. He is Professor of Mechanics and Structures in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois, and is affiliated with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, and Computational Science and Engineering. Dr. Masud has made fundamental contributions to the development of Multiscale and Stabilized finite element methods for nonlinear fluid and solid mechanics. He has authored or co-authored over 100 refereed journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters, and is co-editor of the book Finite Element Method: 1970’s and Beyond. He has organized over twenty five International Symposia on Stabilized and Multiscale Finite Element Methods, has served as guest editor seven times for various International Journals, and is currently serving on the Editorial Boards of eight Journals. He is Chair of the Fluid Mechanics Committee of ASME, and past Chair of the Computational Mechanics Committee of ASCE. He served as the General Conference Chair for the ASME Applied Mechanics and Materials Conference (McMAT-2011), and he will be the General Conference Chair for the US National Congress on Computational Mechanics (USNCCM-2021) scheduled to be held in Chicago in 2021. Dr. Masud has served as Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics, ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics, and ASCE Journal of Nanomecahnics and Micromechanics. He is member-at-large of the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME, member-at-large of the Executive Committee of the US Association of Computational Mechanics (USACM), member of the General Council of the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM), and Charter Member of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of ASCE. He is Associate Fellow of AIAA, and Fellow of USACM, IACM, ASME, EMI, and AAM.

      1. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmKai James is an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to this, he was a postdoc at Columbia University in New York, and he earned his PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies in 2012. His research focuses primarily on computational solid mechanics and computational design optimization with an emphasis on light-weight, energy-efficient systems. He is especially interested in developing novel algorithms that leverage high-fidelity computational models and topology optimization methods for conceptual design of complex nonlinear engineering structures. Some of his major research projects include aerostructural optimization of aircraft wings, design of morphing structures, and design for additive manufacturing.

      1. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmDr. Nicole Riemer is an Associate Professor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences and an Affiliate of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her doctorat degree from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. Her research focus is the development of computer simulations that describe how aerosol particles are created, transported, and transformed in the atmosphere. Her group uses these simulations, together with observational and satellite data, to understand how aerosol particles impact human health, weather, and climate. This understanding guides the development of effective pollution mitigation strategies and responses to global climate change. Her teaching portfolio at the University of Illinois includes courses at the undergraduate as well as the graduate level, such as Atmospheric Thermodynamics, Cloud Physics, Atmospheric Radiation, Atmospheric Chemistry, Physical Meteorology, and Aerosol Dynamics and Chemistry. For her teaching she was listed multiple times for several courses on the “List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent”. Dr. Riemer is a member of the German National Academic Foundation and received the NSF CAREER award. She was designated as the 2014-2015 I. C. Gunsalus Scholar, is recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Promotion Award and received an NCSA Fellowship for 2017. She held the position of editor for the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and is currently an editor for Aerosol Science and Technology.

      1. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmDr. Ting Lu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his B.S. in Physics from Zhejiang University (China) in 2002 and his Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California at San Diego in 2007. Prior to joining UIUC in 2011, Dr. Lu was a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton, MIT, and Wyss Institute at Harvard. Dr. Lu’s research focuses on the analysis, construction and utilization of bacterial gene regulatory networks for cellular functionality programming. He has received several awards for his research, including ONR Young Investigator Award, NSF CAREER Award, NARSAD Young Investigator Award, AHA National Scientist Development Grant, and Young Innovator of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering.
