The Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) center is excited to offer our third summer school, to be held June 17-21, 2013 at the Q Center in St. Charles, Illinois! We invite and encourage utility and industry practitioners, researchers, and students to attend and explore the nexus between electrical energy systems and cybersecurity. Our program is designed to provide an essential background in the basics of security and resiliency for cyber infrastructure in power and smart grids. Participants will also gain an understanding of the smarter energy system evolving from the power grid, as well as associated cybersecurity challenges. We've planned an intensive, engaging, and value-packed week of topics and activities, including an optional hands-on training lab for SCADA security assessment. Scholarship opportunities are available for academic students with a demonstrated interest in power or smart grid cybersecurity. We also offer several sponsorship opportunities for industry, vendor, and utilities that want to increase their brand awareness within the smart grid community. Registration and on-site lodging are limited, so consider securing both as soon as possible to guarantee participation. To register or to learn more about sponsorship or scholarship opportunities, visit: http://tcipg.org/2013-summer-school. Some important event deadlines: April 14 - Scholarship Application Deadline April 16 - Early Bird Registration Deadline May 17 - Regular Registration Deadline May 24 - Deadline to Reserve Q Center Lodging June 3 - Last Day to Register

Pollen Power is a week long day camp for talented girls who are interested in the biological sciences. Hosted by the Institute for Genomic Biology on the University of Illinois campus, the camp will provide an opportunity for girls to study plant responses to climate change in the distant past and the coming century. Research groups of 8 to 10 campers led by a female graduate student will use million dollar microscopes to image pollen, giving the campers first-hand experience in a research environment with female mentors. The camp is designed for middle school age girls with an interest in plants and the environment.

Communicating science is as important to the scientific process as designing, conducting, and analyzing the experiment itself. This workshop focuses on essential techniques for effective writing and presentation of scientific information, and includes a session on the publishing process and on ethics of scientific publication.

This workshop is open to faculty members or their graduate students or both. Spaces are still available for the workshop. The fee for the workshop will be about $500 per participant, payable to the Department of Animal Sciences, which is facilitating the fee collection on my behalf. The workshop is limited to 24 participants. To register for the workshop, please contact Mike Grossman directly at mikeg@illinois.edu. Must register by June 14th.
