The Chimesmaster

Sue Wood

Sue Wood, an environmental chemist, has been playing the chime in the Altgeld Hall Tower since 1971. She became Chimesmaster in 1995 when Albert E. Marien, who had played the bells for 37 years, was designated Chimesmaster Emeritus.

Mrs. Wood has taken lessons on the Rees Memorial Carillon, Springfield, Illinois, and was the carillonneur at University Lutheran Church, Champaign, for 32 years. She is an associate member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.

Albert E. Marien

Albert E. Marien, Chimesmaster from 1958-1994, began giving bell concerts while teaching at Berry College in Georgia. For three years he regularly performed on an electric carillon in the Berry Chapel Albert E. MarienTower. During this time, Mr. Marien spent his summers doing graduate work at the University of Chicago; there he listened to the daily carillon concerts performed from Rockefeller Chapel's tower.

After becoming settled on the staff of the University of Illinois, Mr. Marien was invited by Mr. Duane Branigan, former director of the School of Music, to play regular concerts on the bells in Altgeld's Tower. In 1964 Mr. Marien became an associated member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.

Mr. Marien was an alumnus of the University of Illinois and of Delta Phi fraternity. After earning his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the U of I, he earned a second Master's degree from Denver University.

Mr. Marien was a certified internal auditor and authored numerous articles on internal control. He held two contributing editorships and a consulting editorship with various business periodicals and is listed in "Who's Who in America." A kindly gentleman he was. He passed away in June 2002 at age 90 years.
