After a pioneering nanophotonics career most recently at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center, Yurii Vlasov, one of the University of Illinois' newest faculty members, intends to study brain-inspired computing architectures as a Founder Professor in three departments at Illinois, including the Department of Bioengineering.

Bioengineering earns NSF grant to revolutionize undergraduate education

A new $2 million grant will shift the Department of Bioengineering’s undergraduate program to a needs-focused curriculum over the next five years, bridging the gap between technical skills and societal implications. The changes will allow students to integrate clinical and research experiences and translate medical assessment practices while organizing faculty into communities of practice. Bioengineering at Illinois is one of only seven programs across the country to receive the 2016 REvolutionizing engineering and computer science Departments (RED) grant from the National Science Foundation.

Photo of Andrew Smith. Smith shines new light on molecular biology with quantum dot breakthrough

Bioengineering Assistant Professor Andrew Smith and team have developed small, stable quantum dots to improve current technology used to examine and analyze tissue. Their work has broad potential, but they also hope to apply it specifically to developing a better understanding of brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Bioengineering Assistant Professor Greg Underhill and his lab group published several papers on their work developing a better understanding of the complexity of liver stem cells, how they develop, and the impact of their microenvironments. The research could help diagnose and determine treatments especially for developmental liver issues.

Konopka receives Whitaker fellowship

Christian Konopka, M.D./Ph.D. student in Bioengineering, is participating in the Whitaker International summer fellowship in Gdansk, Poland, where he is working on prostate cancer imaging strategies.

Hedhli earns multiple awards

Jamila Hedhli, Bioengineering Ph.D. student, recently earned several awards, including one for diabetes research, an opportunity to study at the Massachusetts General Hospital during Summer 2016, and an award for her Image of Research entry.

Senior Design 2016: Top projects develop improvements for people with disabilities

The two most popular Senior Design projects from 2016 include designs to integrate sensory feedback into prosthetic hands and create a better way to replace electronics in cochlear implants.

The Rejuvenation of Everitt Lab.

When the renovation of Everitt Laboratory is completed, one of the most noticeable changes to the building's exterior will be the north side along the Boneyard Creek. The space is slated to be enclosed in glass and will be used for multiple purposes, including instruction, lectures, discussions, collaboration and events. Shown here at top is a current photo of Everitt Lab with construction under way. Below that is the architect's rendering of the same side of the building.
