During the last five centuries Brazil has been constantly engaged in economic, cultural and intellectual exchanges, interacting with the rest of the globe. Agricultural commodities were exported, manufactured goods were imported. Ideas and cultural expressions were brought from abroad, transformed and adapted to Brazilian reality. Frequently, they traveled back. This process has shaped national identity. Nowadays, Brazil exports agricultural commodities, industrial goods, airplanes, Pentecostal churches, soap operas, Centers for Gaucho Traditions, music, carnival, soccer, capoeira, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and Havaianas flip-flops sandals. The country brands itself in the global arena as having a national identity associated with a "Brazilian way of life" dealing with images of nature, body, sexuality, and joy of living. In recent years, Brazil has become highly diversified, with the increasing emergence of fresh social players who build new identities and demand recognition and specific rights.

Gilman Information Session

September 8
3:30-4:30 pm
807 S. Wright St. Floor 5 (IUB 514)

The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of $5,000 (plus up to a $3,000 supplement for critical languages) for U.S. citizen undergraduate students to pursue summer, semester, or academic-year study abroad opportunities in other countries. This is a need based award, and to be eligible, students currently must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant.  The National and International Scholarships Program is willing to assist in reviewing your scholarship application material, in fact, we welcome the opportunity to help make your application more competitive!  As such, we are offering a two-day informational event about the Gilman Scholarship. September 8th from 3:30-4:30 is an informational session and alumni Q&A.  September 9th between 3:30-4:30 is a workshop on how to craft your application essays.
