Illinois start-up creates training tool to help Paralympic athletes track stroke cadence
 

When U.S. wheelchair racing athletes compete at the Paralympic Games in Rio this month, they will have a training advantage, thanks to a new app developed by an Illinois start-up company.

The wheelchair athletes have been using an Android Wear smartwatch application that measures their stroke cadence, helping them better understand their stroke efficiency. Cadence Counter was developed by Chicago-based Rithmio, which was co-founded by Illinois alumnus Adam Tilton and CSL and mechanical science and engineering faculty member Prashant Mehta. In August, the National Science Foundation in conjunction with the Semiconductor Research Corporation awarded a team of engineering researchers from the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago $2.5 million to develop a chip-level photonic device technology for transporting and processing information at the chip level. The researchers, led by ECE Illinois Associate Professor John Dallesasse, will use the transistor laser as the building block for high-speed optical links and electronic-photonic digital logic circuits, enabling faster and more energy efficient chip-to-chip communications and signal/information processing.  Health Care Engineering Systems Center receives donated RoSS surgical robot

Researchers have been seeking ways to understand and combat the rising levels of urban noise. A team at the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC), led by ADSC postdoctoral researcher Cagdas Tuna and CSL professor and ADSC Director Doug Jones, has developed a signal processing technique that measures urban noise through portable microphones secured to the top of a moving vehicle, enabling the creation of a wide-ranging map of noise pollution. Spotting a glitch on the factory floor in real time—and reconfiguring around it—are the goals of a new $4 million multi-university project involving researchers from the University of Michigan, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Cornell University.

The project, which involves Sibin Mohan, PI and research assistant professor of computer science and the Information Trust Institute, and Sayan Mitra, co-PI and CSL associate professor of electical and computer enginering, aims to increase factory productivity and American competitiveness. Read more.

CSL Assistant Professor Maxim Raginsky has received a $75,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Science of Information to investigate methods that process information in the space of beliefs, with the goal of enabling computers to make more accurate predictions with “soft” data while consuming less energy. Through a three-year, $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, CSL faculty members Carolyn Beck, an associate professor of industrial and enterprise systems engineering, and Srinivasa Salapaka, an associate professor of mechanical science and engineering, are developing algorithms to simplify and facilitate analysis of these large networks.
