2017 - 2018 CSE Fellows

Call for Proposals

Graduate students are invited to submit proposals for support of interdisciplinary research in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE).

Projects must be interdisciplinary and must be oriented towards computational science and engineering and/or applied math.

Submission Deadline:  March 31, 2017 at 5:00 pm.

Student participants in winning proposals will be designated as CSE Fellows and will receive the following benefits:

  • Stipend corresponding to a 25% research assistantship in their home department
  • Tuition waiver
  • Access to computational facilities provided by CSE
  • Accounts on parallel supercomputers at NCSA
  • Some limited support for conference travel

Computational Science and Engineering is offering the following workshops to interested students and postdocs. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

Software Carpentry Workshops
NCSA and CSE are hosting Software Carpentry Workshops at NCSA.  This is an excellent opportunity for students and researchers to learn vital computing skills for analyzing data, reproducing workflows, and maintaining research code and data.

CSE Training will hold workshops in the following topics this semester:
February 22, 2017:  MATLAB, with a focus on data analytics
March 28, 2017:  Fluent (CFD)

Cloud 3.0 - Rise of the Big Compute Era: How the Future of Computing Will Transform Science and Engineering

This seminar will explore hardware and software industry trends that have created the perfect storm for a transformational shift in how computing is used in the enterprise.  Traditionally the niche field of high performance computing and supercomputing has only been accessible to those with both million dollar budgets and a broad set of experts across the hardware and software stack. These traditional assumptions are no longer true, as new technologies make high performance computing accessible and economical. Across the economy, this decade-long shift from traditional on premise computing to the cloud is worth $4 trillion. For engineers and scientists, the big compute transformation can drive a fundamental shift in how high-end computing is leveraged to drive innovation.  The seminar will address these broad trends as well as specific real-world examples, including how cloud-based high performance computing is being used for engineering design, scientific discovery, and big data analytics.

Joris Poort is Founder and CEO of Rescale, the leading cloud platform for high performance computing, a Silicon Valley based startup backed by top tier investors including Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, Peter Thiel, Microsoft, among numerous others. Prior to founding Rescale, Joris worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company on product development engagements in the high-tech sector.  Joris began his career at Boeing, where he worked for five years as a design simulation and software engineer on the 787 program, optimizing the production design of the tail and wings.  Joris holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Washington, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Bryan Wang received his M.S. degree in Engineering as well as Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Human Resource Development.  He has 12 years of experience in the field of education and training as a training coordinator, instructor, and instructional designer for various training programs, courses, workshops at The Ohio State University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center.

Bryan has expertise in instructional design, work analysis, and process improvement. His interests include photography, videography, and graphic design.

His office is located at 2102D NCSA.

The Hacker Within Student Group

The Hacker Within (THW) is an officially registered student organization with CSE affiliation. THW's goal is to encourage students to learn and share tenets of the scientific computing endeavor by arranging a venue for peer-driven teaching, discussions, and forums for sharing skills and best practices for scientific computation, events, and professional resources for putting them into practice.  The group meets bi-weekly with each meeting consisting of at least a discussion/tutorial on a scientific computing problem and a lightning research talk aimed to provide students an overview on a specific area of research.

HPCBio Workshop March 2017

HPCBio is announcing two workshops to be held in March.  The Data Carpentry for Genomics workshop (March 6, 8, 13, & 15) will cover linux & high performance computing, R and Bioconductor with a genomics focus. Intelligence Community (IC) Postdoctoral Research Program

The Intelligence Community (IC) Postdoctoral Research Program is accepting applications  through March 31, 2017.  The Program supports postdocs to conduct research at universities, colleges, and U.S. government laboratories throughout the United States.

Recent Ph.D. graduates or doctoral students who will soon complete their degrees are encouraged to apply.  The fellowships offer a very competitive annual stipend and an annual travel allowance for the Postdoc, as well as awards to the host institution. 

Award Details:
Annual stipends range from $75,000 to $79,000, depending on research location
Annual travel budget of up to $6,000
Appointments for 2 years, and option to extend for a third year
Host institutions receive an annual laboratory budget of up to $5,000
Research Advisors receive a $10,000 stipend and an annual travel budget of up to $2,000

Postdoc Eligibility:
U. S. citizenship required
Ph.D. received within 5 years of the application deadline

Sandia National Laboratories Technical Intern Program

Center for Cyber Defenders (CCD)
The Center for Cyber Defenders (CCD) program is focused on developing the next generation of
experts in the field of computer security from the software stack down to embedded hardware. Our
program fosters students’ abilities to address the serious and unique challenges existing in the
realm of cyber security research, and encourages the exploration of original ideas necessary to
keep pace with the rapid changes in information technology and the increasing sophistication of
cyber threats. Students will gain experience in some of the following: operating systems analysis,
virtualization technologies including software defined networking, distributed systems, storage,
and algorithm analysis and development, advanced modeling and emulation, machine learning, reverse
engineering, network programming, cryptography research and analysis, and much more. Projects range
from working on small research and development (R&D) efforts to large, multidisciplinary team
collaborations.
