Confidence and Risk-Taking Is Focus of Latest Early Learning Moment

IEL has added a new Early Learning Moment on Confidence and Risk-Taking to help caregivers foster confidence in young children as well as developmentally appropriate risk-taking to learn new skills. Using videos and developmental information, Illinois Early Learning Moments demonstrate the strategies for interaction outlined in the Illinois Early Learning Guidelines (IELGs). Four other Early Learning Moments are also available: Creativity, Inventiveness, and Imagination; Curiosity and Initiative; Persistence, Effort, and Attentiveness; and Problem Solving.

Parallel Talk: A Simple Way to Provide English Vocabulary

In her latest blog, Dr. Bernadette Laumann discusses how Illinois teachers and caregivers increasingly find themselves in settings where young dual language learners speak a number of different home languages. This can provide new challenges in helping young children expand their English vocabulary. Parallel talk, where a teacher or caregiver watches and describes but does not expect any response from the child, is one strategy that may be used with all children to increase their language skills.
