SUBMISSION DEADLINE TOMORROW: Carle Illinois Collaborative Research Seed Funding Program
The Carle Illinois Collaborative Research Seed Funding Program welcomes research proposals from a broad array of disciplines and clinical areas. This round of funding will focus on four priority areas: population health, imaging, data analytics, and rural health. In these areas the aim is to:
- Foster collaboration between Carle clinicians and Illinois researchers
- Support innovative approaches to the challenges facing clinical care
- Promote opportunities to improve positive health outcomes
- Enable collaborators to acquire preliminary data for a subsequent external collaborative grant application
- Stimulate significant external research or clinical trial funding from either government or corporate sources
All proposals must include a lead investigator from both Carle and from Illinois, with the expectation that projects reflect a true collaborative partnership (i.e., investigators from both institutions play significant and essential roles). More information, including eligibility guidelines, selection criteria, proposal preparation, and how to submit your proposal can be found here. The deadline for submitting a proposal is April 28, 2017.
Cancer and the Microbiome Workshop
Nick Chia will be hosting a Cancer and the Microbiome Workshop at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN on August 11th. Phil Daschner, the program director in the Division of Cancer Biology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), will be in attendance to talk about funding opportunities and provide special guidance to new and/or junior investigators. OLINK Proteomics: A Precision Proteomics Solution for Targeted Protein Biomarker Discovery
OLINK is being hosted on campus by Dr. Zeynep Madak-Erdogan on a unique profiling initiative. On Friday they will be presenting the technology on our campus. Here is more info from OLINK:
Challenges of Protein Profiling —A Solution
Some of the challenges working with current protein profiling methodologies includes amount of sample, the scalability of assays, and the sacrifice between performance and precision. That is to say, to get ultra-sensitive detection, reproducibility may need to be sacrificed. OLINK has a technology that provides a best in class solution. To provide some context, OLINK represents a rather novel but validated platform (>250,000 samples run, 60 publications to date) of a broad range of high quality protein targets (981) which we run in 92 target panel requiring only one microliter of sample. OLINK’s analytically validated panels are centered around the core technology of Proximity Extension Assay or PEA.

Ovarian Cancer Survivor Volunteer Program
Woman to Woman, a program of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, pairs gynecologic cancer patients with trained survivor volunteers who provide one-on-one emotional support and mentoring to women when they need it most. From the moment of diagnosis through the end of treatment, Woman to Woman survivor volunteers have helped hundreds of women and their families cope with gynecologic cancer.
Through the program, one-year grants of either $50,000 (for a hospital-based program) or $25,000 (for a community-based organization) will be awarded to institutions with a large volume of gynecologic cancer patients and a need to provide this type of support to patients. Grants are provided to cover the cost of a part-time program coordinator's salary (either a new hire or reassignment), program costs, and the patient fund (no indirect costs are allowed). It is expected that each Woman to Woman program will become self-funding after the first year.
OCRFA will provide all program materials for patients, as well as technical assistance and support, for the life of the program (even after the end of the grant period). Programs also will have access to a dedicated section of the website (under construction) featuring tools to assist in the development and administration of new programs.

Tracking unstable chromosomes helps predict lung cancer's return
Cancer Research UK — Scientists have found that unstable chromosomes within lung tumours increases the risk of cancer returning after surgery, and have used this new knowledge to detect relapse long before standard testing. These are the first findings from the Cancer Research UK-funded TRACERx lung cancer study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine and Nature.
TRACERx is the first study to look at the evolution of cancer in real time and immense detail. Researchers followed patients all the way from diagnosis through to either disease relapse or cure after surgery, tracking and analysing how their cancer developed..
