With one month left in our fiscal year, Uni’s Parent Fund and Annual Fund still need your support. These funds are used primarily for teacher salaries and fee waivers. The Parent Fund is down $26,000 from last year and the Annual Fund is down $21,000. Any contributions to these funds by June 30 will help Uni achieve another deficit-free year!
NPR's Jeremy Hobson speaks at 2017 graduation, receives "Rising Star" award
The class of 2017 graduated May 20 at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, where Uni alum Jeremy Hobson addressed the graduates. The 1999 Uni graduate received Uni's inaugural Rising Star award during the ceremony. This year's graduating class was welcomed by Uni Director Jeff Walkington, with a student welcome from gradutating senior John Harden. Dr. Elizabeth Majerus, head of Uni's English Department, gave the commencement address, retiring History teacher Dr. Bill Sutton gave the benediction, and senior Madie Gardner delivered the student farewell.
Executive Fine Arts teacher Rick Murphy coordinated the music for graduation, which included selections from the Graduation Choir, the Senior Ensemble, and a solo trumpet performance by graduating senior James Vaughen (pictured, right.)
The students voted for "1999" by Prince and "Dancing Queen" by Abba for their processional songs, and "I've had the time of my life" by Franke Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markovitz for the recessional. We wish the class all the best and welcome our newest alumni!
Micele honored for advocacy role
Uni’s college counselor, Lisa Micele, was recently named the Illinois School Counselor Association Advocate of the Year. Micele was acknowledged both for her advocacy for Uni students via our exceptional college counseling program and her contributions to wider audiences. She regularly presents on panels and information sessions for professional organizations, and is a regular guest on the NPR “Here and Now” show, where she has shared her knowledge, insights, compassion and humor in interviews on topics such as financial aid and gap years.
"Here and Now", an NPR news show, airs on 450 stations and reaches nearly 5 million listeners. The show is co-hosted by none other than Uni alum Jeremy Hobson (see above.)
Uni says farewell to Janet Morford and Bill Sutton
Uni said goodbye to two long-time history teachers, Bill Sutton and Janet Morford, at the end of the semester. Sutton taught at Uni since 1992 and Morford began in 2006.
Sutton, who most recently taught U.S. History and U.S. History seminar, is retiring. He was instrumental in building Uni’s relationship with Habitat for Humanity in Clarksdale, MS. Sutton inspired students in his classes with his stories, songs and antics.
Morford is moving to join her husband, who accepted a position out of state. Morford has been teaching subbie social studies and heading the WILL Oral History project, as well as serving as the department’s executive teacher. She has also been a leader in guiding subfreshmen through the transition to Uni and incorporating the skills they need to succeed into her classes.
Both well-loved teachers will be sadly missed, and we wish them all the best.
