Spring 2018  | Jan 22-26 | e-Weekly Archive

Welcome Paul!

We are delighted to announce Paul Myers as the Visiting Outreach Coordinator of European Union Center, effective January 18, 2018.

Paul Myers is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a European Union Studies graduate minor. As a traditionally-trained former teacher in public and charter schools in the Chicagoland area, his research interests include the marketization and privatization of the provision of schooling both domestically and internationally. As such, Paul has a particular interest in the Swedish educational system and was awarded FLAS Fellowships from the EU Center in 2013 (Summer), 2014-15 (Academic Year), and 2015 (Summer) to learn Swedish both in Sweden and in our own Scandinavian Program. He was also awarded the Anna Jensen Memorial Scandinavian Award in 2016 to travel to Stockholm and collect data for his proposed dissertation research.

Paul is very excited to join the EUC as the Visiting Outreach Coordinator and looks forward to working with faculty, students, K-12 educators, and community members in creating programs and events that strengthen the understanding of the EU as well as the EU-US relationship.

Paul can be reached at psmyers2@illinois.edu. Please join us in welcoming Paul and wishing him the best as he assumes his role at the EU Center.

Conversations on Europe Videoconference: Wind, Water, Sun: Clean Energy in Europe

Wednesday, Jan 24  |  11 am
507 E. Green St, Rm 411
Export to Outlook or iCal

Did you know that the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive sets rules for the EU to achieve a target of 20% renewables for final energy consumption by 2020? And that EU member states have already agreed on a new renewable energy target of at least 27% of final energy consumption in the EU as a whole by 2030? At the same time, the European Commission has set goals for a clean energy transition that mark a major step towards the creation of a European Energy Union. What is driving EU energy policy and why do some critics suggest that the current goals are hurting Europe’s competitiveness while not effectively combatting climate change? Is energy policy another step towards an “ever closer union?” Join our panel of experts for an interactive panel discussion of clean energy and European policy.

QUESTIONS?
Contact EU Center Associate Director and FLAS Coordinator Dr. Sebnem Ozkan (217-244-0570 or asozkan@illinois.edu)

The U.S. Department of Education, which underwrites the FLAS program, has not yet notified us, or any other college or university in the United States, about our allocation for the 2018-2022 FLAS funding cycle, which includes the coming academic year (2018-19). In anticipation of receiving this funding, the application will include all University of Illinois FLAS Fellowship-granting Centers that have applied for Title VI FLAS Fellowship allocations; however, a Center, including the European Union Center CANNOT guarantee an academic year fellowship without notification of their FLAS allocation. Summer 2018 funding is already granted for the European Union Center.

EU Center Requests for Proposals from Faculty, Departments and Units: US Dept. of Education Title VI

The European Union Center (EU Center) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UI) seeks proposals from UI faculty, departments and units from all disciplines and fields of study that support research, teaching, outreach, and economic development activities that focus on contemporary Europe, the European Union, and transatlantic affairs.

The Center is issuing this request in anticipation of a forthcoming broader institutional call for proposals from the US Department of Education Title VI program. Pending target award amount and grant period cycle to be specified by the external sponsor, we anticipate submitting a four-year Title VI National Resource Center grant proposal. In the last cycle, the Department of Education has awarded the Center more than $2 million to cover program expenses in support of research, teaching, outreach, and language fellowships and training.

For the Request for Proposals and further details about the EU Center's mission; types of activities to be supported; external sponsor priorities; evaluation criteria; and application, notification and follow-up processes, please visit this webpage: http://europe.illinois.edu/resources/faculty-funding/rfp-title-vi-2018-2022/

The deadline for receipt of proposals is February 15, 2018. Online submission form is available at https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/3694657

Seats Open: EURO 490 – The Council of the European Union

1pm-1:50pm Tuesdays, Spring 2017 Semester
113 Gregory Hall

The EU Center is happy to announce the return of EURO 490, The Council of the European Union. This course offers an in-depth analysis of one of the primary institutions of the European Union, the Council of the European Union. The course explores this institution through the lens of the unique "rotating presidency" of the Council, providing students with a quick-changing frame of reference that ensures contemporary and topical discussions. After discussing the theoretical and structural framework of the Council of the European Union, the course critically analyzes presidencies from the past and present with a special emphasis on how different leaders and environments impact the behavior of the institution. The class will conclude with at least one trip to an off-campus Model EU tournament to experience first-hand how the institutional functions of the European Union impact policy outcomes.

This course is excellent fit for anyone interested in Model EU, and will allow students to practice their public speaking skills while at the same time learning about an important EU institution. For more information, please contact the course instructor, Dr. Neil Vander Most, at vanderm1@illinois.edu.

Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages have been designated by the United States government as critical to U.S. National Security and can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 11 to August 4, 2018, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters.  This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned 10 credits (completing your language requirement), you will have had fun!

The deadline to register is April 30, 2018.  For more information, visit our website at www.silmw.linguistics.illinois.edu.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at silmw@illinois.edu.  We hope to see you this summer!

Linguis Europae is back for Spring semester! Irish as an ornament

Everyday communication in Ireland has been conducted exclusively in English for at least two centuries, which led to the relative neglect of Irish. Despite the fact that the Irish language still nearing extinction in everyday public life, it remains a great source of pride for the Irish. If anything, pride and confidence may save the Irish language from being forever reduced to the status of an occasional cultural ornament. Read more on the EUC Blog!
