Final Call: Problem-Based Learning Workshop

The Carle Illinois College of Medicine will be hosting a three-hour workshop on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on April 24 from 4:00 P.M. -7:00 P.M in the Video Conference Room at the Carle Forum.

PBL is a cornerstone of our curriculum, allowing our students to work through cases to gain the necessary knowledge to become an excellent physician-innovator. During the workshop, you will learn about PBL, why we chose this model of learning, how the sessions operate and ask any questions you may have regarding the process.

2018 Annual Curriculum Retreat Recap

With over 60 faculty and staff participating, the first annual curriculum retreat was an outstanding success. From a welcome and profile of our admitted students by Dean Li to an overview and updates on our innovative curriculum with Dr. Judith L Rowen, attendees got a good look at how the college is getting ready for our first class of physician-innovators. Dr. Stephanie Ceman introduced Team-Based Learning to the group and explored how this type of active learning can improve student involvement. Then Dr. Rowen and Dr. April Yasunaga engaged the audience through the most fun you could have with Professionalism and Student Mistreatment policies by using a TBL to create discussion on these policies. Dr. Jenny Amos added to the excitement through our “speed dating” round to help create new connections amongst faculty and staff. A big thanks to Dr. Rowen and Dr., Dr. Jennie Hsu-Lumetta, and Mr. Sol Roberts-Lieb for leading breakout sessions.

If you weren’t able to attend, we have uploaded all of the slides, policies, and handouts for your review. The large group sessions were recorded and will be uploaded as soon as they are edited.

We would like to announce that the 2019 Curriculum Retreat will be held on January 24, 2019. This will be a full-day event, so please mark your calendars now.

Academic Affairs Represents at CGEA

Dr. Rowen, Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Coiado and Dr. Pluta presented the poster “Integrating Engineering into the Carle Illinois College of Medicine Curriculum” at the Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA). The poster focused on the presentation of the curriculum development process with the end goal of developing a new generation of physician-innovators that can apply quantitative skills, technological principles, and engineering concepts to enhance patient care. The team received several questions from medical educators attending the conference about how engineering and innovation was integrated into the curriculum and how engineering, science, and medicine were integrated into the clinical cases.  

Teachers Ranked as Excellent

Several Carle Illinois faculty were listed in the CITL List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent for Fall 2017 for their excellence in teaching. Congrats to all of you. Medical Maker Lab Series: The Molecule Maker Lab

Join presenters Martin Burke, Irfan Ahmad and Chad Rienstra for an energetic discussion on how the new Molecule Maker Lab, part of the larger Medical Maker Lab at Illinois, will propel innovations at the molecular scale to transform most current industries and revolutionize health care. "Context matters when striving to promote active and lifelong learning in medical education'"

In the October 6, 2017 edition of Medical Education, Joris Berkhout, Esther Helmich, Pim Teunissen, Cees P M van der Vleuten, and A Debbie C Jaarsma published an article discussing how context matters when looking at the changes from traditional to active learning pedagogies in medical education over the past 30 years.  "In the 30 years that have passed since The Edinburgh Declaration on Medical Education, we have made tremendous progress in research on fostering ‘self‐directed and independent study’ as propagated in this declaration, of which one prime example is research carried out on problem‐based learning. However, a large portion of medical education happens outside of classrooms, in authentic clinical contexts. Therefore, this article discusses recent developments in research regarding fostering active learning in clinical contexts."

"Tracking Active Learning in the Medical School Curriculum: A Learning-Centered Approach"

In the March 2018 Issue of the Journal of Medical Education and Curricular Development, Lise McCoy et. al,  examined the saturation and breadth of active learning replacing traditional lectures in first-year medical school curricula. "Over the past decade, reform efforts in medical and health care education curricula have emphasized the importance of active learning (AL) and technology to improve student engagement and critical thinking skills.^"
