A newsletter of the College of Media at Illinois | March 2012

Note from the Dean

It's been a busy month in the College of Media, for both students and alumni. Several events have brought these two groups together - we hope for the benefit of both.

Journalism Career Night and Senior Saturday brought two groups of successful alumni to campus to talk with students about the future of journalism, advertising, public relations and more. They discussed careers, interviewing skills, networking and more. It's amazing to see this interaction and energizing to know that our alumni are not only successful in the professional world, but also willing to share their experiences and advice with those ready to start their own career.

Student journalists covered these events. You'll see links to their stories and photos below. This experience is important in a number of ways. Students gain valuable bylines, and we are able to share with you the events happening here in the College.

We would not be able to hold these important career preparation activities without the support of alumni. Hearing from working professionals means a great deal to our students. It reassures them that what they are studying has a purpose and a future. It also helps them connect with other members of the Illinois family that they might not otherwise meet.

These career events are supported in part by alumni contributions to the College of Media Annual Fund. If you're interested in supporting next year's activities, let us know. Or, you can make a donation online here. As always, I would be delighted to talk with you regardless of what's on your mind. Give me a call at 217-244-2596 or email at slaterj@illinois.edu.

Go Illini!
Jan, Interim Dean
